Paul Gilbert @ AN Club

\r\nSetting off to go to AN Club on a Monday night live show I expected a homey show with a small crowd. And as Jim, (our photographer) said, I thought it wouldn’t have that many people until I turned around this corner. Reaching An Club we found out almost every guitar in Athens was there. And not just Athens, I saw Gus Drax from BIOMECHANICAL in the venue, John Simvonis from DESCENDING to name a couple who come from signed Greek bands.  \r\n

\r\nIt seemed like a full house. I don’t know the exact number of tickets but we seemed to be around three hundred people. The opening act, Theodore Ziras never made it to the stage and so the show actually started around 22.00. Guilbert received a warm loud welcome from the crowd and after greeting “Athina” he got busy with the six strings. You could see people in the crowd you don’t normally see in a heavy metal gig. Guys in white well ironed shirts and maybe glasses focusing and zooming on the guitarist’s fingers as he unfolded his tremendous talent. Wearing his headphones with the number 66 he seemed to knit with his pick on the guitar… \r\n

\r\nThe set list included songs from both his solo albums with emphasis on the latest release Silence followed by a deafening roar, but also songs from the Racer X era of his. It’s pretty amazing to get the chance to watch live a guitar player who has participated in G3 among with masters of the field such as Joe Santriani and John Pertucci in 2007. \r\n

\r\nThe accompanying band included Emi Gilbert on the keys who obviously had an amazing bonding with her other half and who performed extreme interludes within the guitar riffs. \r\n

\r\nGuilbert wearing his headphones most of the time performed exquisitely and the crowd was watching breathless as the six strings came alive under his fingertips. Not Much more to say. Only thing I can do is admit I witnessed one of the few guitarists who can really tame the six strings.
\r\n
\r\nSo until we meet again, I bow before your skill Mr Guilbert!
