Septic Flesh - The Great Mass

Septic Flesh - The Great Mass

\r\nShit! This is how I am to begin with this review. Septic Flesh made me shit my pants! For real, I have to find something to hold on to in order to start writing about "The Great Mass". Shall we begin with the wrapping? The band’s new cover art is astonishing once again. Majestic and aestheticaly awesome, Seth’s new work is a magic new addition to his already massive portfolio. But let’s see the real content: music.
\r\n
\r\n This new piece or carnal artistry is the band’s most theatrical, soundtrack-ish, cinematic creation. The change these fine greeks did in their latest albums has given them a whole new push and their music is getting bigger, more majestic, even darker. "Τhe Great Mass" contains melodies that can bring older SF music to mind(more like the 90’s era), Sotiris’ melodic vocals help boost that "de ja vu" even more. From there on the bar has been raised to sky high levels. The songs flow, breathe, come alive and traverse within the listener like floating souls. The symphonic element, stronger than ever, gets mixed with the metal/extreme demonic side and Foti’s blastbeats creating horrific art. The compositions are full of surprises, pauses and are masterfuly structured so the result works its way inside you while pumping out terror at the same time. The atmosphere could haunt a kindergarden, the orchestral arrangements are superb!
\r\n
\r\n But keeping the complexity apart, you will also find great melodic hooks like "Rising" that could work excellently as a single(though I think a single is due to come out soon). This ability to write music that is complex and mind grabbing at the same time is a privilige for a small number of real artists and Septic Flesh is one of them. The guitars build up quite a few melodic themes but they’re also able to become aggressive enough to throw you into the deepest pit. The style they’ve developed is truly unique. I don’t want to call it symphonic metal(gay term!) but the music included here could be the sound carpet of an epic themed flik. Seth’s vocals are profoundly more brutal and improved giving extra points to this "product".
\r\n
\r\n Like a beast of undefined form, ready to swallow your very being "The Great Mass" seems unbeatable in front of all rivals. The band walks its own path and dwells in its own kingdom, showing complete disregard to any trends and music industry tricks thus creating Music and Art that will withstand the passing of time. Peter Tägtgren’s sound is a guarantee and a benchmark of perfection, just have a listen and you’ll meet my words. One of the best album releases of the decade in my humble opinion. This is Creation.\r\n
