Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind the God

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind the God

After three years of waiting during which the band offered us 2 split releases and a 7”, the finish doom metal outfit Spiritus Mortis, have finally returned with a brand new album. First of all, I admit that I’ve been waiting this release with such an expectation since Spiritus Mortis is a band I really respect and suggest to anyone that really digs “proper” Doom Metal, to take a good listen to them.
\r\nSo, After their previous stunning albums “S/T” and “Fallen” (2004 and 2006) and having only some months before the release announcing the new vocalist of the band which is Sami Hynninen (A.K.A. Sir Albert Witchfinder, ex Reverend Bizarre), our need for pure, and straight doom metal, at last has been covered in the best possible way. Although the album’s starter (Man Of Steel) moves more into traditional heavy metal sound (Manowar) the album soon returns to the classic tortured doomed way of Spiritus Mortis playing, with boosted rhythm section, long tracks, some minimal melodic lines and of course tons of Sabbathic Riffing
\r\nThe only thing for sure is that for many Spiritus Mortis fans the participation of Sami in “The God Behind The God” would another one reason to purchase this album and I cant judge this in a negative way, because, we all agree that Vesa Lampi voice (ex vocalist of the band) was a characteristic one but in comparison to Sami’s voice, I believe that Vesa sounds a little more Rock N Roll, while Sami sounds more “tortured” and for example in tracks like  “Curved Horizon”,”When the Wind Howled with a Human Voice ”, “The God Behind The God” , Sami’s vocals gives a greater boost.
\r\nWell as an epilogue to this review I’d like to remind that Spiritus Mortis is the oldest doom metal band from Finland (1987) and from the deepest parts of my tortured soul I wish the band that this album would be the reason to become more known around the world… In Doom!
