HORROR MOVIES INSPIRING METAL GROUPS
\r\nI believe that music and cinema are similar arts, Some of you propably believe this, some of you maybe not, so let’s have a flashback and find out. Let’s see especially metal music and horror movies. Starting from the master of theatrical horror rock Alice Cooper and his monumental “Welcom to my nightmare” back in 1975, we will find there, the Classic anthem “Black Widow” in wich intro we can easily recognise the voice of the master of the maccabre Vincent Price. Two years later (1977) is the official date of the birth of the legendary Italians doomsters blacksters or whatever
\r\nDeath SS. Every fan of the band knows that death SS from the beginning since a couple of years ago, used to have a conceptional stageclothing, inspired by the classic horror flicks of 30’s by the early Universal’s monsters series. So the members of the band where: The Vampyre, The Zombie, The Death, The Mummy and The Werewolf.
\r\nMoving on to the 80’s, the hard rock/metal community welcomes the N.W.O.B.H.M. and the band called “Witchfinder General” wich name was of course "borrowed" by the classic british horror movie “Witchfinder General” back in the 1968, (In the US. released as “The Conqueror Worm”) starring Mr. Price as the bloodthirsty Mathew Hopkins. During the same decade (80’s) the band “King Diamond” appeared, wich lyrics seemed to be scripts for horror movies, but king made them concept albums. (By The way did anyone noticed the resemblance between King Diamond’s “Them” and the movie “The Others”).
\r\nMoving on to the next decade (90’s), randomly I’ve got two albums that can be considered as two of the best for the 90’s, Theater Of Tragedy’s “Velvet Darkness TheyFear” and Cathedral’s “Carnival Bizarre”. I think everyone of us can remember from the album “Velvet darkness they fear” the spoken part in the middle of “…and When he falleth” wich is a dialogue taken from the movie “Masque Of The Red Death” (1964) with Vincent Price in the leading role. “Masque of the red death” is the adaption of E.A. Poe’s sametitled short story. In Carnival Bizarre we can find two references to Horror movies, the first on is the track Mathew Hopkins – The Witchfinder General and the second is the track “The Night of The Seagulls” wich reffers to the “Blind Dead” Series created by Spanish Director Amando De Ossorio in the early 70’s. Cathedral have many songs inspired by classic horror movies like “Captain Clegg” from Caravan Beyond Redemption” album. Captain Clegg is inspired by the sametitled movie (also “Night Creatures” outside U.K.) in wich Peter Cushing has the leading role.
\r\nIn the current decade one of the most known groups is Cradle of Filth, with their leader Dani showing his respect and love to all these horror flicks of the past. Many of us had the opportunity to “admire” his acting abillities in the “Cradle of Fear” B slasher movie of 2001. Dani also will do the vocals in Daemonia’s song wich will be part of the soundtrack of the forthcoming Dario Argento’s movie “Mother of tears”
\r\nAnother Horror movies freak is of course Rob Zombie who named his first band after his favourite movie “White Zombie” created back in 1932 and starred the great Bela Lugosi. These last years Rrob gave us the abillity to admire his directing abillity , directing splatter b movies like “The House of 1,000 Corpses”, “The Devil Rejects” “Werewolf Women Of SS” and the latest re make of Carpenter’s “Haloween”
\r\nAt last but not least we got mr. Mike Patton, whom group “Fantomas” released in 2001 the album “Director’s Cut”. In This album fantomas covered many soundtracks amongst them, “The Devil Rides Out” , “Rosemary’s Baby”, “Cape Fear” “The Omen”.
\r\nOf Course there are so many references from Metal groups to Cinema in general, so I tried to mention the most popular groups, or movies. Any Comment, correction is much aprecciated. \r\n
