THE ROTTED - Gian Pyres

\r\nBorn out of the dingy London back streets, THE ROTTED have risen up and established themselves as one of the UK’s leading extreme metal acts.Though proud to be spawned in the death and extreme metal scene, the boys’ influences aren’t just the ones normally associated with the style of music they create. THE ROTTED’s take on the genre comes from a completely different angle; It’s not the genre or style, it’s the attitude and delivery. As fans of classic rock, hardcore, punk, death, thrash and black metal, musical inspiration for ‘Get Dead Or Die Trying’ can be found in pretty much any decent guitar-based band of the last 30 years. Metalzone.gr had the chance to chat with the band’s lead guitarist Gian Pyres, in order to get to know the band, their music and their latest release.
\r\n
\r\nMetalzone: I’d like to welcome you in Metalzone. gr and want to start from the reason why you changed your name. Were there any legal reasons or are you taking a different musical direction?
\r\n
\r\nGian Pyres: Hey, hows it going Metalzone!?  Yeah, the reason for the name change is really because by the time myself and Nate joined the band, Gorerotted had already started to sound different, and go through different circumstances. Our fans and friends always referred to us as “the rotted” as a friendly nickname so that was a natural choice for the new name, there were no legal reasons or anything, we were just bored with the whole “gore” thing and needed to start a fresh new chapter.
\r\n
\r\nMetalzone: Your new album is called Get Dead Or Die Trying. What made you choose this title?
\r\nGian Pyres: Hehe well Its Ben who came up with that title, but I remember we all agreed that the title can mean a few things. Its kind of a play on words, a pun to be sure.
\r\n
\r\nMetalzone:Can you give us a little background information about the album?\r\n

\r\n

\r\nGian Pyres: This album had taken a few twists and turns in its writing process to get where it has today... When we started writing Get Dead we were all focusing on the horrors of our own fucked up life experiences, rather than some made up gore stuff about zombies and corpses etc. the trials and tribulations of shitty society is a regular nightmare so we aint short of inspiration , all this of course is served on a plate of cynicism and dark humour to complete it.
\r\n
\r\nMetalzone: What style would you say your music is?\r\n

\r\n

\r\nGian Pyres: In essence – its solid honest metal which has been brutally arse-fucked by hardcore punk, death & black metal, and rock ’n’ roll.
\r\n
\r\nMetalzone: You emphasize on technique on many parts of the album do you think this makes the album difficult for an everyday listener to accept? \r\n

\r\n

\r\nGian Pyres: We tried to get a vibe with this album and maintain a “groove” whereupon even if a riff was technical and extreme it would still maintain a pulse or a groove where even the less expert of ears would be picking up the hooks easily – despite the blast beats or arpeggiated guitar licks
\r\n
\r\nMetalzone: What message do you want to pass through to your fans? \r\n

\r\n

\r\nGian Pyres: Buy our album and try it for size, its got a few surprises in it for fans of most types of heavy/extreme music. And when you come to see us live, don’t expect to see the same show twice, its a party up there and anything goes, come along , bring your mates and come get drunk with us at the bar, the party’s on!
\r\n
\r\nMetalzone: What feedback have you gotten so far for your new release? Are you satisfied with it?\r\n

\r\n

\r\nGian Pyres: The feedback we have been receiving from the mainstream UK press so far has been really fucking good so far metal hammer gave it 4/5  , Terrorizer 8/10 and Kerrang 4/5. It seems to be getting similar reviews in a lot of  other European magazines also
\r\n
\r\nMetalzone: What are your expectations for the future? \r\n

\r\n

\r\nGian Pyres: We just want to party hard and play hard.. we take each day as it comes!
\r\n
\r\nMetalzone: Are you satisfied with the result of the album? Your co operation with MetalBlade?\r\n

\r\n

\r\nGian Pyres:Metalblade have been in our corner since we started this album, no sweat, they even backed us up  on the name change. we regularly communicate with them in Germany and the UK branch of the label who deals with us are all really cool guys who we’ve known for years
\r\n
\r\nMetalzone: Do you have any touring plans booked in support of the album? Dates/Places?
\r\n

\r\n

\r\nGian Pyres:We are in the process of playing some summer festivals this season. So far we got Summer breeze, Wacken, Vlamrock, Dynamo. Then I guess we will have a big Euro tour worked out for Autumn/Winter 08
\r\n
\r\nMetalzone: What is the most hilarious live experience you can recall? \r\n

\r\n

\r\nGian Pyres: God, thats a hard one as we have had tons of shit happen in the past as Gorerotted.. the band have only just started touring as The Rotted so the tales will be told as they arrive!
\r\n
\r\nMetalzone: Thank you for your time and I wish you all the best for the future  \r\n

\r\n

\r\nGian Pyres: nice one mate,  safe!\r\n
