INTERVIEW WITH A WOLF-SEASONS OF THE WOLF
Οι Seasons of the Wolf είναι μια heavy metal μπάντα από τη Φλόριντα που δημιουργήθηκε το 1988 από τον κιθαρίστα / παραγωγό - Barry "Skully" Waddell, vocalist - Wes Edward Waddell και keyboard/engineer -Dennis "Dr. Samurai" Ristow. Μια μπάντα που έχει πάρει τη μουσική της και την αγάπη της για τη metal πολύ σοβαρά έκτοτε. Διαθέτουν και λειτουργούν ένα στούντιο ηχογράφησης και την ανεξάρτητη δισκογραφική εταιρεία "Earth Mother Music". Eχουν πουλήσει πάνω από 40.000 αντίτυπα (Κασέτες, CD και Βινύλιο) σε όλο τον κόσμο χωρίς να έχουν παίξει live ποτέ έξω από την πολιτεία τους και χωρίς την στήριξη κάποιας μεγάλης δισκογραφικής εταιρίας. Αν αυτό δεν είναι αποτέλεσμα ταλέντου και σκληρής δουλειάς, τότε τι μπορεί ναι είναι; Το τελευταίο τους άλμπουμ «Last Act of Defiance» που κυκλοφόρησε στις 26 Ιανουαρίου - ένα πραγματικό κόσμημα -αν θέλετε την γνώμη μου- αξίζει την προσοχή μας. Εδώ είναι μια συνέντευξη με τον "αρχηγό της αγέλης των λύκων" Barry D. "Skully" Waddell για Metalzone!

Ακριβώς όπως παρακολουθείς μια εκπομπή που σου αρέσει ξανά. Υπάρχουν πάντα περισσότερες λεπτομέρειες που μπορεί να μην έχεις παρατηρήσει απο την πρώτη φορά. Χαίρομαι που το απολαμβάνεις.
Christine: Λοιπόν, ξεκίνησες τους SOTW τον Οκτώβριο του 1988, μαζί με τον αδερφό σου Wes και τον Dennis Ristow. Δώσε μας μια σύντομη περιγραφή για τα πρώτα βήματα της μπάντας.
Skully:Αρχικά ήταν μόνο ο Dennis και εγώ. Αποφασίσαμε ότι ήρθε η ώρα να αλλάξουμε το όνομα μας και να ξεκινήσουμε απο την αρχή. Μετά από κάποιους μήνες με auditions, κατέληξε μαζί μας και ο αδελφός μου που μόλις είχε τελειώσει το σχολείο. Δουλέψαμε και γράψαμε υλικό για δύο άλμπουμ και κάναμε και live εμφανίσεις στην περιοχή μας. Αυτά τα δύο άλμπουμ κατέληξαν να επανεκδοθούν πριν από λίγα χρόνια σε ένα διπλό CD με τίτλο Anthology. Αυτό το υλικό δεν είχε κυκλοφορήσει ποτέ έξω από το Tampa Bay της Florida. Ηταν κάτι που κάλυψε το μεγάλο κενό μεταξύ του 2007 και του σήμερα. Κάτι άλλο που βοήθησε ήταν μερικές επανεκδόσεις βινυλίων. Έχουμε πολλές παλιές studio ηχογραφήσεις μεταξύ του 92 και του 94 που δεν έχουν κυκλοφορήσει ποτέ. Μπορεί κάποια στιγμή να κυκλοφορήσουν.
Christine: Η τρίτη σας κυκλοφορία με τίτλο Telstar, βγήκε το 1992, μια περίοδο με πολλά σημεία καμπής και με αρκετές αλλαγές στο μουσικό κλάδο για το heavy metal. Υπήρχε χώρος για μια νέα μπάντα prog / melodic heavy metal όπως εσείς; Και πόσο δύσκολο ήταν;
Skully: Ναι - ξεκινήσαμε να δουλεύουμε με τον Bud Snyder το 1992. Αυτό το άλμπουμ έγινε γνωστό ως το πρώτο μας άλμπουμ όταν κυκλοφόρησε διεθνώς το 1996. Τότε ήταν που οι SOTW ξεκίνησαν να εκτίθενται σε ένα πιο παγκόσμιο επίπεδο.Δεν δώσαμε ποτέ προσοχή σε αυτό που έκαναν οι άλλοι. Απλά επικεντρωθήκαμε στο να κάνουμε πράγματα με τον δικό μας τρόπο. Θα έλεγα ότι η μόνη δυσκολία ήταν με τον έξω κόσμο. Απο την μια ο ήχος των SOTW ήταν πολύ heavy για τους οπαδούς των 80's hair band type και απο την άλλη δεν ήταν αρκετά heavy για τους θαυμαστές του death metal. Αυτά μεταξύ 1988 και 1994. Μετά το 1995 η κατάσταση άρχισε να αλλάζει. Ανθρωποι με πιο doom, dark ακούσματα άρχισαν να απολαμβάνουν τους SOTW.
Christine: Τώρα κάτι για το όνομα της μπάντας. Μπορώ να καταλάβω το λόγο που θέλατε να αλλάξετε το όνομα Equinox - πάρα πολλές μπάντες με αυτό το όνομα - αλλά γιατί Seasons of the Wolf;
Skully: Τότε, κάθε μπάντα είχε είτε μία είτε δύο λέξεις για όνομα. Δεν είχε μείνει τίποτα χαχαχα! Ο λύκος είναι ένα παρεξηγημένο πλάσμα.Το seasons αντιπροσωπεύει τις αλλάγες κατά τις οποίες μια αγέλη λύκων καταφέρνει να επιβιώσει. Ηταν μια μεγαλύτερη και ενδιαφέρουσα φράση. Για εμάς ήταν ξεχωριστή και ακούστηκε σαν σωστή επιλογή για τη μουσική μας. Εχει και κάτι "σκοτεινό" , πράγμα που μας έδωσε την δυνατότητα να μπορούμε να είμαστε πιο πειραματικοί με τον ήχο και να γράψουμε για πολλά διαφορετικά θέματα. Δεν υπήρχε άλλη μπάντα με το όνομα Seasons Of The Wolf αλλά και να υπήρχε σίγουρα δεν θα είχαν ως σύμβολο το Quilex "starship".
Christine: Ξέρω ότι απέκτησες την πρώτη σου κιθάρα στην ηλικία των 12! Ηθελες πάντα να γίνεις μουσικός; Και ποιες ήταν οι μουσικές σου επιρροές;
Skully: Στην πραγματικότητα η πρώτη μου κιθάρα ήταν μια παιδική όταν ήμουν 4 χρονών. Επαιρνα ένα κορδόνι και ένωνα την πλαστική κιθάρα με την τηλεόραση και έκανα ότι έπαιζα μουσική κάτι που άρεσε πολύ στους γονείς μου. Αλλά ναι - όταν ήμουν 12 πήρα την πρώτη πραγματική κιθάρα μου και ένα μικρό ενισχυτή. Είχα επίσης ένα μικρό drum kit. Ασχολούμουν με ότι είχε σχέση με τη rock. Eπαιρνα τα άλμπουμ του πατέρα μου, Buddy Holly και Elvis. Έτσι, το rock'n'roll των 50s ήταν η αρχή όλων. Στην ηλικία των 14 είχα την πρώτη μου μπάντα και ο πατέρας μου ερχόταν στο υπόγειο και τραγουδούσε μαζί μας Credence, Elvis και Buddy Holly. Τότε ήταν η εποχή που ξεκινήσαμε και τις δικές μας δημιουργίες. Το να είμαι rock μουσικός είναι κάτι που γεννήθηκα να κάνω - έτσι ή αλλιώς. Κι έτσι κατέληξα να παίζω μπάσο, τύμπανα και να τραγουδάω. Η κιθάρα είναι το κύριο όργανο μου. Και όλα αυτά με τον καιρό με οδήγησαν να παίζω και να δημιουργώ πολλά πράγματα.
Christine: Χωρίς να θέλω να φανώ αγενής θα ήθελα να μάθω πόσο δύσκολο ήταν να συνεχίσεις χωρίς τον αδερφό σου Wes λόγω των προβλημάτων υγείας του;
Skully: Καταρχάς - όταν όλα έγιναν στα τέλη του 2008 πρέπει να παραδεχτώ ότι ήταν κάτι που μας ταρακούνησε. Ηταν κάτι που δεν το περιμέναμε. Αλλά - μετά από μερικά χρόνια καταφέραμε να το αντιμετωπίσουμε. Αποφάσισα να τελειώσω τα φωνητικά για το "Last Act Of Defiance". Μετά ακολούθησε η αναμονή της κυκλοφορίας έτσι ώστε να μπούν και πάλι οι SOTW πίσω στο παιχνίδι. Έτσι, ο χρόνος μεταξύ 2008 και 2017 ήταν ένας μακρύς σκληρός αγώνας για να επαναφέρουμε τα πράγματα στη σωστή τους πορεία. Τώρα με το καινούργιο lineup και τον καινούργιο τραγουδιστή είμαστε ήδη στο στούντιο και γράφουμε το επόμενο άλμπουμ. Σχεδιάζουμε να κυκλοφορίσει τον επόμενο χρόνο για να καλύψουμε το χαμένο έδαφος.
Christine: Τριάντα ολόκληρα χρόνια έχουν περάσει από την ημέρα της «γέννησης» των SOTW. Έχεις σκεφτεί ποτέ να εγκαταλείψεις τη μπάντα λόγω δυσκολιών ή για κάποιους άλλους λόγους;
Skully: Όχι, να εγκαταλείψω τη μουσική ποτέ. Υπήρξαν μερικές φορές που ο Dennis κι εγώ σκεφτήκαμε να προχωρήσουμε πέρα απο τους SOTW κατά τη διάρκεια του 2008 / 2009. Αλλά - δεν είχε νόημα να το κάνουμε αυτό απο τη στιγμή που οι SOTW είχαν δημιουργήσει ένα καλό όνομα στο χώρο. Αν και underground μπάντα είχαμε κερδίσει πολλά. Ημουν πάντα ο κυριότερος writer/producer και ο Dennis ο κυριότερος writer/studio engineer. Ο Dr. Samurai γνωρίζει καλά πως να δίνει ζωή σε μια παραγωγή των SOTW. Ξεκινήσαμε τους SOTW θέλοντας να έχουμε heavy κιθάρες και keyboards, κάτι που κάνει τους SOTW αυτό που θέλαμε να είναι πάντα. Εφόσον αυτό υπάρχει εμείς θα συνεχίσουμε. Θα κυκλοφορήσουμε ένα all-instrumental άλμπουμ με τίτλο SOTW Presents "Skully & Dr. Samurai". Είναι ήδη έτοιμο. Θα κυκλοφορήσει με το banner των SOTW. Μουσική για filmmakers!
Christine: Έχω διαβάσει ότι σου αρέσουν ταινίες και βιβλία horron και sci-fi! Έχετε επίσης συνθέσει μουσική για πολλές ταινίες. Πες μας κάτι γι 'αυτό. Αποτελεί πηγή έμπνευσης για εσάς;
Skully: Πράγματι - Έτσι ξεκίνησαν και οι SOTW. Ο Dennis και εγώ ασχοληθήκαμε με instrumental μουσική για Sci-Fi και Horror soundtracks. Εμπνεόμαστε και οι δύο από έργα των Tangerine Dream, John Carpenter, Mike Oldfield, και οτιδήποτε παράξενο έχει χρησιμοποιηθεί σε κινηματογραφικές και τηλεοπτικές παραγωγές. Είναι κάτι που έδωσε στους SOTW ένα μοναδικό ύφος.
Christine:Η "ανεξαρτησία" είναι μια απο τις αγαπημένες μου λέξεις, αλλά όσον αφορά τη μουσική βιομηχανία τα πράγματα είναι λίγο διαφορετικά. Πόσο δύσκολο είναι να είσαι «ανεξάρτητος»; Πιστεύεις ότι τα πράγματα θα μπορούσαν να αποδειχτούν καλύτερα ή χειρότερα για τους SOTW αν είχατε υπογράψει κάποιο συμβόλαιο με μια μεγάλη δισκογραφική; Και πες μου και δυο λόγια για τον Thomas Dargel και την Iron Shield Records.
Skully: Στην πραγματικότητα είχαμε επαφές με δισκογραφικές στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 90. Αλλά οι προσφορές δεν ήταν καλές για εμάς. Το 1992 δημιούργησα την Earth Mother Music ως τη δική μας ανεξάρτητη εταιρεία και το 1995 δημιουργήσαμε το δικό μας στούντιο ηχογράφησης και γραφείο για να δουλέψουμε. Με την πάροδο του χρόνου και κάνοντας τα πάντα μόνοι μας είχαμε πολλές επαφές. Επιτρέψαμε την επανέκδοση και σε άλλες εταιρείες σε όλο τον κόσμο. Ηταν κάτι που λειτούργησε υπέρ μας. Το 2008 συναντήσαμε τον Thomas, το 2008, αμέσως μετά την κυκλοφορία του Once In A Blue Moon.Η Iron Shield συνεργάστηκε με τον Cheryl στη Witches Brew Records και έκαναν πραγματικότητα το διπλό CD "Anthology". Και οι δύο αυτές εταιρείες είχαν ήδη αγοράσει και άλλα άλμπουμ SOTW. Μετά απο μερικές επισκέψεις του Thomas αναπτύχθηκε μια καλή σχέση μεταξύ μας. Και έτσι, ο Thomas και η Iron Shield Records είναι πραγματικά η πρώτη εταιρεία που έχουμε κάνει μια πλήρη συμφωνία αδειοδότησης. Πιθανότατα να συνεχίσουμε και στο επόμενο άλμπουμ μας. Μας αρέσει πραγματικά να δουλεύουμε με τον Thomas. Είναι πολύ υποστηρικτικός.
Christine: Ξέρω ότι εσείς και ο Dr. Samurai βοηθάτε και άλλες underground μπάντες να προωθήσουν τη μουσική τους. Ως βετεράνος στον τομέα, ποια είναι η πρώτη σας συμβουλή;
Skully: Βεβαιωθείτε ότι είναι κάτι που πραγματικά σας αρέσει να κάνετε. Υπάρχουν πολλές θυσίες με τις οποίες θα πρέπει να συμβιβαστείτε. Να είστε υπομονετικοί και με αντοχές. Πάντα να προσπαθείτε για την καλύτερη παρουσίαση που μπορείτε. Μη συμβιβάζεστε με κάτι λιγότερο. Να ασχολείστε πάντα και να μη χάνετε τις επαφές σας χωρίς όμως να είστε ενοχλητικοί. Μην συνεργάζεστε με ανθρώπους που δεν εμπιστεύεστε. Μάθετε από τα λάθη σας. Orna Verum baby!!
Christine: Ας υποθέσουμε ότι σου δίνω ένα τζίνι, πες μου τις τρεις επιθυμίες σου για τους SOTW.
Skully: Θα θέλαμε να ετοιμάσουμε το κατάλληλο κλίμα για να έρθουμε στην Ευρώπη και να παίξουμε σε όλα τα μεγάλα metal φεστιβάλ. Η Ευρώπη είναι καλή με τους SOTW. Το 90% των οπαδών μας είναι εκεί. Θα θέλαμε να είμαστε μέρος των αλλάγών εδώ στις Η.Π.Α. σε ότι αφορά τη μουσική μας. Τα τελευταία χρόνια δεν ήταν τόσο καλά για πολλές μπάντες στο είδος μας.
Christine: Το "Last Act of Defiance" είναι το τελευταίο σας άλμπουμ. Πείτε μας μερικά πράγματα για την έως τώρα ανταπόκριση του κοινού και του τύπου.
Skully: Είναι το τελευταίο άλμπουμ με τον πρώην τραγουδιστή μας Wes Waddell. Μπόρεσε να ολοκληρώσει μόνο 4 τραγούδια πριν φύγει. Εγω τελείωσα τα υπόλοιπα με τα φωνητικά. Δεν θέλαμε να φέρουμε έναν άλλο τραγουδιστή μέχρι να ολοκληρωθεί και να βγει το άλμπουμ.Το cover και γενικά η αίσθηση του άλμπουμ αντικατοπτρίζει τον χρόνο και τις δυσκολίες που περάσαμε απο την ηχογράφηση του έως και την κυκλοφορία του. Στην πραγματικότητα ο λύκος με την Flying V κιθάρα είμαι εγώ που "κάνω δάχτυλο" στο τρικέφαλο τέρας και δείχνει πως αισθανόμουν πραγματικά όταν αγωνιζόμουν να φέρω τα πράγματα στη σωστή τους πορεία. Δουλεύοντας στο promotion όλες οι εταιρείς μαζί, η Iron Shield, η Pure Steel Records και η Earth Mother Music η ανταπόκριση ήταν πολύ καλή σε σύντομο χρονικό διάστημα.
Christine: Κάτι που με εντυπωσίασε ανάμεσα σε πολλά άλλα πράγματα είναι ο αριθμός των τραγουδιών που γράφετε. Η πρώτη κυκλοφορία το 1989 με 9 τραγούδια, το ίδιο ισχύει για τη δεύτερη και ούτω καθεξής! Και ήταν demos!! Τα τραγούδια του Last Act ειίναι όλα καινούργια;
Skully: To Last Act έχει μερικά παλιότερα κομμάτια που ταιριαξαν στο άλμπουμ και τα υπόλοιπα γράφτηκαν στην πορεία. Καταλήγουμε πάντα να γράφουμε μερικά καινούργια τον καιρό που κάνουμε και την παραγωγή. Μόλις το art work και γενικά το άλμπουμ ως σύνολο κοντευει να ολοκληρωθεί πάντα γράφουμε ένα δυο κομμάτια ακόμα που ταιριάζουν καλύτερα στο αλμπουμ. Αυτά που δεν χρησιμοποιούμε καταλήγουν σε άλλο άλμπουμ ή ως bonus tracks για επανέκδοση σε βινύλιο. Έχουμε πολλά παλαιότερα κομμάτια που δεν υπάρχουν σε άλμπουμ και μερικές φορές βάζουμε και απο αυτά.
Christine: Μελλοντικά σχέδια και τυχόν live εμφανίσεις στο άμεσο μέλλον;
Skully: Αυτή τη στιγμή βρισκόμαστε στο στούντιο για το επόμενο άλμπουμ με το καινούργιο lineup Έχουμε περίπου πέντε ακόμα τραγούδια για να τα τελειώσουμε. Ένα από τα τραγούδια θα κυκλοφορήσει ως single και μουσικό βίντεο πριν την κυκλοφορία του full lenght τον επόμενο χρόνο. Το σχέδιο ειναι αυτό. Μπορεί να έχουμε open studio nights για live show αργότερα αυτό το χρόνο. Η επόμενη χρονιά θα ειναι η χρονιά των live εμφανίσεων για τους STOW μετά την κυκλοφορία του επόμενου άλμπουμ. Ένα μεγάλο μέρος αυτού του νέου υλικού έχει γραφτεί τα τελευταία χρόνια και θα ειναι μαζί με το πιο πρόσφατο.
Christine: Λίγα λόγια για τους Έλληνες οπαδούς σας. Θα έχουν ποτέ την ευκαιρία να σε δουν στη σκηνή;
Skully: Το ελπίζω. Είναι και ένας απο τους κυριότερους λόγους που προσπαθούμε να κυκλοφορήσουμε το νέο μας άλμπουμ τον επόμενο χρόνο. Πρέπει να υπάρξει ζήτηση μέσω της προβολής του, η οποία δεν ειναι ποτέ αρκετή. Ευτυχώς, το κάνουμε όμως με τη βοήθεια και την υποστήριξη όλων όπως τη δική σας ! Και σίγουρα εκτιμούμε ό, τι μπορούμε να πάρουμε. Δεν εξαρτώνται όλα μόνο από τη μπάντα. Παίζει ρόλο και το promotion σε όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερους ανθρώπους. Και αν τους αρέσει πραγματικά αυτό που κάνουμε τότε ίσως όλα όσα θέλουμε γίνουν πραγματικότητα. Έχουμε παίξει σε πολλά live στο παρελθόν. Και τίποτα δεν μπορεί να αντικαταστήσει την αίσθηση του ενθουσιασμού και του πάθους όταν είσαι σε ένα μέρος γεμάτο από ανθρώπους που σηκώνουν τη γροθιά τους και τραγουδούν όλοι μαζί. Οι εκφράσεις στο πρόσωπό τους και το να τους συναντάς μετά την παράσταση.
Christine: Εύχομαι ό, τι καλύτερο και ευχαριστώ για το χρόνο σας! Θα ήθελα το κλείσιμο αυτής της συνέντευξης να είναι δικό σας.
Skully: Εκτιμούμε και πάλι αυτή την ευκαιρία και ελπίζουμε ότι οι αναγνώστες του Metal Zone να τη βρούν ενδιαφέρουσα. Όταν όλα έχουν υποθεί το μόνο που έχει σημασία είναι η μουσική. Τα τραγούδια. Οι λέξεις και τα riffs. Το vibe που δημιουργεί σε κάθε άτομο. Όπως συμβαίνει με κάθε άλμπουμ των STOW, κάνουμε ένα ταξίδι σε κάθε τραγούδι. A band that has taken its music, and its love for metal very seriously ever since. They own and operate a recording studio and Independent Record Label "Earth Mother Music».They have never performed live outside their home territory of Florida and had no outside involvement from a major record label so they are totally independent, something that didn't hold them back since they have sold over 40,000 units on various formats (Cassette tapes, CD's, and Vinyl ) all around the world. If this is not a result of talent and hard work, then what? Christine: First of all I would like to welcome you to Metalzone and guess what! I’m listening to your latest album right now for maybe hhmm …the tenth time so far! Congrats!
Skully: Oh that is great. Thank you. I think you have given it enough listens where you start to pick up little things here and there in the mix. :) Anyone who listens through a few times is always much appreciated. Just like watching a show that you like over again. There are always more details you may not have noticed the first time through. Glad you are enjoying it.
Christine: So, you started SOTW in October 1988, with your brother Wes and Dennis Ristow. Give us a brief story of the first steps of the band.
Skully: At first it was just Dennis and me left over from another band Equinox. We decided it was time for a name change and to begin again. After a few months of auditions, my brother ended up joining us right after he graduated high school. Mostly we just worked on writing a couple albums worth of material with our first drummer and bassist joining us a bit later in time to start recording. We played a few live shows in our local area. Those two albums worth ended up being re-released a few years ago on a double CD titled Anthology. That material had never been released outside of Tampa Bay Florida. Part of what filled in a long gap between 2007 and now.
Christine: Your third release, Telstar, was out in 1992 a period that there were lots of turning points in the music business especially with the heavy metal genre. Was there any room for a new prog/melodic heavy metal band like you? And how difficult was it?
Skully: Yes - we started working with Bud Snyder at Telstar Studio in 1992. That album would become known as our first album internationally released in 1996. That is when SOTW began the exposure on a more global level. We really never paid much attention to what everyone else was doing. We just concentrated on doing things the way we wanted. I'd say the only difficulty was with the outside world. SOTW was too heavy for the 80's hair band type fans and we were not heavy enough for the extreme death metal fans. There were heavy concentrations of this going on in those early days between 1988 and 1994. But after 95 that began to fade away. A lot of people into more darker, doomy, dynamic music started to find SOTW and enjoy it.
Christine: Now something about the name of the band. I can understand the reason that you wanted to change your first name Equinox -too many bands with that name- but why Seasons of the Wolf?
Skully: Back then every band out there mostly either had one or two words for a name. All the colors have been used. hahaha! The Wolf is a miss-understood creature we could relate with. And seasons of change that a pack of wolves survives through in the wild was interesting. It was a longer phrase. It was unique to us and sounded like the right choice for our music. A bit on the dark side and gave us the ability to be more experimental with the sound and write many different subject matters. And it worked for us that there would not be another band called Seasons Of The Wolf. And they sure would not have the Quilex "starship" as a symbol.
Christine: I know that you got your first guitar at the age of 12!! Have you always wanted to become a musician? And what were your musical influences?
Skully: I actually had a small baby guitar when I was 4 years old. I used to take a string and attach it from the plastic guitar to the TV set and pretend I was playing along with whatever music was on. My Mom and Dad got a kick out of that. But yes - when I was 12 I got my first real guitar and a small amp. Also had a small drum kit. I was into everything that rocked. I would get into my Dad's Buddy Holly and Elvis albums. So, 50's rock'n'roll was the start of it all. Had my first band at age 14 and my Dad would come down to the basement and sing with us on some Credence, Elvis, and Buddy Holly tunes. Although at the time we already started jamming out on our own creations. Being a rock musician is just something I was born to do - one way or another. And so, I ended up playing bass, drums, and singing too. The guitar is my main instrument. And all that in time has led me to play and producing several other projects.
Christine: I don't mean to intrude but how difficult was for you to continue without your brother Wes due to his health issues?
Skully: At first - when it all came down in late 2008 I must admit it kicked our ass pretty good. We never saw that coming. But - after a couple years went by we manned up. I decided to finish the vocals for "Last Act Of Defiance" Then the long wait to finally get it out and get SOTW back in the game. So, the time between 2008 and 2017 was a long hard struggle to get things back on track. Now with a new line-up and new singer, we are already in the studio recording the next album. We plan to release it next year to make up for lost time.
Christine: Thirty whole years have passed since the day of SOTW’s « birth ». Have you ever thought of quitting the band due to difficulties or some other reasons?
Skully: No not quitting music ever. There were a few times Dennis and I thought about moving on from SOTW during 2008 / 2009. But - it made no sense to do that when SOTW had built up a good name and reputation in the business. Even though still underground we made a fairly nice dent around the world. I have always been the main and Dennis a main writer/studio engineer. Dr. Samurai knows what makes a SOTW production come to life. We started SOTW with the idea to have heavy guitars and keyboards as the sound that makes SOTW what we wanted it to be. As long as that is there to be had will continue. We are going to release an all-instrumental album soon titled SOTW Presents "Skully & Dr. Samurai." It is already recorded and ready to go. It will still be released under the SOTW banner. Music for filmmakers!
Christine: I’ve read that you have a thing for horror and Sci-fi films and books! You have also composed music for several films. Tell us something about that. Is it also a source of inspiration for you?
Skully: Indeed - That is how SOTW began. Dennis and I worked on instrumental music for Sci-Fi and Horror soundtracks. We are both inspired by works on Tangerine Dream, John Carpenter, Mike Oldfield, and anything bizarre that has been used in film and TV productions. That is part of what gave SOTW a unique style. Always an underlying atmosphere depending on the subject of the lyrics.
Christine: «independence» is one of my fav words but as far as the music business is concerned things are a little bit different. How difficult is being «independent» from the scratch? Do you believe that things could have turned out better or worse for SOTW if you had a contract signed with a big label? Give me the pros and cons please and also tell me about Thomas Dargel and Iron Shield Records.
Skully: We actually had contacts with major label interest a few times in the early 90's. But each time the deals they had to offer were not good for us. We were not what they were looking for and they were not going to be all that helpful to us. In 1992 I formed Earth Mother Music as our own independent label and in 1995 we built our own recording studio and office to work out of. Over the course of all the years and doing everything ourselves we made a lot of contacts. Other labels around the world we would license to for re-releasing. Over time that worked in our favor. We met Thomas back in 2008 just after the Once In A Blue Moon release. His Iron Shield Records teamed up with Cheryl at Witches Brew Records and made the "Anthology" double CD package a reality and released it. Both these labels had already been purchasing other SOTW albums for their stock. After Thomas came over for visit a few times a good relationship formed. And so, Thomas and Iron Shield Records is really the first label to ever do a full licensing deal and put out a new SOTW studio album. We are most likely going to roll with it that way on the next album!! We really love working with Thomas and he is just so damn supportive.
Christine: I know that you and Dr. Samurai also help other underground independent bands from around to promote their music. Being a veteran in the field, which is your first advice for them?
Skully: Make sure it is something that you really love to do if you plan on ever getting anywhere with it. There are a lot of sacrifices you'll have to come to terms with. Be patient and resilient. Always try to put on the best presentation you can. Do not settle for less than the best presentation. Stay busy. Stay in touch with contacts - but don't pester them. Definitely always try to follow up. And again - if you love it and believe in it - just keep at it. Do not work with people that you have not built trust with. Never go into battle with an unproven weapon. Learn from the mistakes. Orna Verum baby!!
Christine: Supposing that I give you a genie tell me your three wishes for SOTW.
Skully: We would like to be able to create enough demand to come to Europe and play all the large metal festivals. Europe has been good to SOTW. 90 % of our support is over there. We would love to be a part of changing how things go over here in the U.S.A for our style of music. The past several years have not been so good for a lot of bands in our genre.
Christine: So, «Last Act of Defiance» is your latest album. Tell us a few things about it and how has the audience and the press responded to it so far?
Skully: It is the last album with our former singer Wes Waddell. He was only able to finish 4 songs before he left. I finished the rest on lead vocals. We did not want to bring in another singer until this album was finished and out. The cover art and over-all feel of the album are exemplary of the time we went through recording it and getting it out. Indeed the wolf with the Flying V guitar is me giving the finger to the 3 headed serpents. It is a dramatization of what I personally felt throughout the time struggling to get things done and keep going. With Iron Shield Records, Pure Steel Records, and Earth Mother Music working the promotions together the exposure and response have been very good in a short amount of time.
Christine: Among the things that impressed me more is the number of songs that you write. The first release in 1989 with 9 songs, the same goes for the second one and so on! They were demos after all! Are the songs of « Last Act of defiance » all new?
Skully: Last Act has a couple older tracks that fit the album and the rest were written as we went on. Seems we always end up writing a couple very new ones at the same time of production. Once the art and overall feel of the album near completion we always end up writing a couple more that fit the album better. The ones we don't use end up on another album or bonus tracks for a vinyl re-issue. We have a lot of older material that has not been recorded on an album. Sometimes we find one of them that fits perfect for a new album.
Christine: What about your future plans? Any live performances in the near future?
Skull: At this time we are in the studio recording the next album with the new line-up. We have about 5 more songs to finish up for it. One of the songs will be released as a single and music video before the full album comes out next year. That is the plan. We may have a couple open studio nights for a live show on our rehearsal stage later this year. Next year is going to be the year of live shows for STOW after another album is released. Getting another album out while the irons are hot! Much of this new material has been written over the past few years. Along with a few right now in the moment creations.
Christine: A few words for your Greek supporters. Will they ever have the chance to see you on stage?
Skully: I sure hope so. Again the main reason we are working to get another album out next year. A demand has to be built through exposure. There can never be enough exposure. Hopefully, we can make this happen with help from support such as you! And we damn sure appreciate all we can get. Because it all is not up to just the band. People are what makes it happen. Exposure to as many people as possible. And if they really like it and believe in it like we do - maybe it can all be reality face to face. We have played a lot of live shows in the past. And nothing can replace the feeling of excitement and passion when standing in a room full of people raising their fist and singing along. The expressions on their face and meeting them after the show.
