VICE - Vice

There are plenty of bands called Vice, but here we are talking about the band from Corona, California that released the "Vice" EP in 1984, and the "Under Cover Lover" LP in 1992. This re-release concerns the 4 tracks of the EP, and contains 6 more songs, 2 of which are from the '92 album.

Very interesting release for a loyal fan of the classic US heavy metal sound of the 80’s. The first 4 tracks are from the EP and besides the classic metal sound, one will also listen to many amazing speed metal references. Very dynamic and uplifting tracks. In the rest of the songs, the listener will deal with slower heavy metal, with several epic touches, but there are still fast moments like in "Sword of the King".

The 4 EP tracks are all excellent. They sound very pleasant and easy-listening. Some of them have more melodies like the amazing "Feel the Fire", but all of them are speed/heavy metal gems, which Agent Steel or Savage Grace would envy to have in their best albums. The fans of these bands must definitely listen to the track "Stalker"- they will worship it.
 
The sound in the other 6 tracks is like a demo, and less clear than in the first 4 songs. But this gives them a heavier and more epic dimension, making the tracks even more mystical and enticing for a well versed fan of this sound. Anyone who has no demo issues, and his ears have been trained to distinguish passionate and authentic moments in the less “fancy” productions will be rewarded by great songs, such as "No Law", "Get A Grip"(what a solo), “The Slaughter”, and the terrific “Armies of the Night”.

This re-release of Vice is successful in general and to some extent extremely successful. It has tracks that both, the dedicated fans of classic heavy metal and the heavy/speed metal fans, will consider classic and often chose to listen to. Neutral listeners will also find good moments in the record, which may prompt them to get more involved in the 80’s American underground heavy metal sound.

Yπάρχουν μπόλικες μπάντες με το όνομα Vice, αλλά εδώ μιλάμε για το συγκρότημα από την Corona, της California που κυκλοφόρησε το “Vice” EP το 1984 και το “Under Cover Lover” LP το 1992. Αυτή η επανακυκλοφορία αφορά στα 4 κομμάτια του EP του ’84, και περιέχει και άλλα 6 τραγούδια, 2 εκ των οποίων είναι από τον δίσκο του ’92.

Πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα κυκλοφορία για έναν πιστό ακροατή του κλασικού US heavy metal ήχου της δεκαετίας του ’80. Τα 4 πρώτα κομμάτια είναι από το ΕΡ και πέρα από κλασικό metal ήχο, κάποιος θα ακούσει και πολλές καταπληκτικές speed metal αναφορές. Πολύ δυναμικά και ξεσηκωτικά κομμάτια. Στα υπόλοιπα τραγούδια ο ακροτής έρχεται αντιμέτωπος με πιο αργόσυρτο heavy metal, με αρκετές επικές πινελιές, αλλά ακόμη υπάρχουν γρήγορες στιγμές όπως στο “Sword of the King”.

Τα κομμάτια του ΕΡ, είναι και τα 4 εξαιρετικά. Ακούγονται πάρα πολύ ευχάριστα. Κάποια έχουν περισσότερες μελωδίες όπως το καταπληκτικό “Feel the Fire”, αλλά όλα βγάζουν μεγάλη metal ένταση, που θα ζήλευαν και οι Agent Steel ή οι Savage Grace στις καλύτερες στιγμές τους. Το “Stalker” πρέπει να το ακούσουν οπωσδήποτε οι οπαδοί αυτών των συγκροτημάτων, θα τρέχουν και δε θα φτάνουν.   

Ο ήχος στα υπόλοιπα 6 κομμάτια είναι σαν από demo, και λιγότερο καθαρός απ’ότι στα 4 πρώτα τραγούδια. Αυτό τους δίνει όμως μια πιο βαριά και επική διάσταση που τους πάει, και κάνει τα κομμάτια ακόμη πιο μυστικιστικά και δελεαστικά για έναν καλά μυημένο οπαδό του ήχου αυτού. Όποιος λοιπόν δεν έχει θέματα με demo καταστάσεις και τα αυτιά του έχουν εξασκηθεί στο να ξεχωρίζουν παθιασμένες kai αυθεντικές στιγμές μέσα από λιγότερο καλογυαλισμένες παραγωγές, θα ανταμειφθούν από το καταπληκτικό αργόσυρτο “No Law”, τις ανατριχιαστικές κιθάρες στα πωρωτικά “Get a Grip” (τι σόλο) και “The Slaughter”, και το αριστουργηματικό “Armies of the Night”.

H επανακυκλοφορία αυτή των Vice κρίνεται συνολικά επιτυχημένη και σε σημεία έως εξαιρετικά επιτυχημένη. Έχει κομμάτια που για τους αφοσιωμένους οπαδούς τόσο του κλασικού heavy metal ήχου, όσο και αυτών του heavy/speed metal, θα μπορούν να θεωρηθούν κλασικά και να τα επιλέγουν συχνά στις ακροάσεις τους στα επόμενα χρόνια. Οι πιο ουδέτεροι ακροατές επίσης θα βρουν καλές στιγμές στον δίσκο, που ίσως τους δώσουν το έναυσμα να ασχοληθούν και αυτοί πιο εντατικά με τον Αμερικάνικο underground ήχο της δεκαετίας του ’80.
