Pentagram - Day Of Reckoning

\r\nI do believe that the contribution of Pentagram, in the Rock / Metal History from the early 70’s as Macabre till today can’t be doubted by none as well as the quality of their each one release cant be doubted too. Pentagram is the band that along with Black Sabbath established the Heavy Doom scene.\r\n

\r\nThe musical material of Pentagram has been well hidden in Demo and Rehearsal tapes since the early 70’s and it took them several years until they released it officially. It is widely known the incidents of the change of the name to Deathrow and the first official release under the name Pentagram back in 1985 with the sametitled album for “Pentagram” records (Private Release). Fortunately the album has been re- issued by Peaceville Records in 1993 under the title “Relentless” and different tracklist order and Cover
\r\nSo In 1987 Pentagram released their second and according to many fans their best album “Day Of The Reckoning”. My personal opinion is that “Day Of The Reckoning is probably one of the 3 top Doom Rock albums ever. The line up of Pentagram this time was Boby Liebling (Vocals), Victor Griffin (Guitars), Martin Swaney (Bass Guitar) and Joe Hasselvander (Drums). The album contained 7 tracks with total running time only 35 minutes, but this is not a problem because its impossible for the listener to listen this album only one time…The Peaceville version of the albums begins with the groovy mid tempo same titled song, “Day Of The Reckoning” and Mr. Griffin really sounds crazy on this one, following the well structured solid rhythm section of Swaney / Hasselvander. The next track is the abysmal down tempo and “dark”, “Evil Seed”, here the insane vocals by Mr. Liebling and especially the lyrics “All Right Now – Won’t You Listen?” made the track more depraved, as it couldn’t be. Next track is the also down tempo and with some killer riffs in in it, “Broken Vows” . Move on to probably the best ever Pentagram song, the re – take of “When the screams come” which originally appeared in the “Under My Thump / When The Screams Come” 7’’ ich back in 1974 via Genimi records but this version is more slow, doomy and heavy, Moving on to the “Burning Savior” track and while we hear its eerie intro and after that the occult lyrics of it, we can ensure ourselves that we met the dark side of Pentagram. (The Swedish Burning Saviors have been named after this Anthem – Song). The next track is obviously inspired by Boby’s favorite band, Blue Cheer; it’s about a doom bluesy song with very intensive breakouts by Griffin and Hasselvander/Sawny. The Last track of the re issue is “Wartime” with it’s Sabbath isque sound. After the listening ends the listener has no choice but to admit that Pentagram is THE greatest Doom Rock band but yet the most underrated.
\r\nThe album has been re issued via Peaceville in 1993 and 2005 with different tracklist order, artwork and re arranged drums by Joe Hasselvander. Pentagram is about to release a new album this year plus a DVD with the Musical history of Bobby Liebling, probably the cultest figure in the rock scene.
