Enemy Of The Sun - Shadows

Enemy Of The Sun - Shadows

\r\nWaldemar Sorychta isn’t definitely by any means an unknown figure to the metal world. Apart from his capacity as a producer and songwriter for bands such as Lacuna Coil, Moonspell, Therion and so on his name is equally familiar from his participation in the bands Despair, Voodocult and above all Grip Inc. (feat. the mighty Dave Lombardo). Enemy Of The Sun consists his new musical vehicle only this time with less famous musicians surrounding his presence. Behind the mic there is a Finnish guy by the name Jules Naveri, Daniel Zeman is abusing the drum kit while the lineup is completed by a female, the known female bassplayer Alla Fedynitch from Pain. This is their debut album with its entirety being written by Sorychta, who also handled production and mix. First of all after his wandering course over the last years into the gothic field’s productions, Sorychta seems that he’s returning to his roots, thrash metal that is. But with a larger diversity based on the bare bones of modern, progressive thrash metal on which various subgenres are being unfolded from death, hard core, to eastern melodic lines, Spanish guitars, queer keyboard mutations and industrial rounding out licks. Of course the guitar sound of Sorychta is always present to its unmistakable trademark. Therefore there are undoubtedly plenty of moments in this album when the comparison with Grip Inc. gets inevitable. But the music of Enemy Of The Sun is much too versatile to proclaim that Sorychta is just resurrecting his ghosts from the past. The whole record touches the classic oriented thrash tunes but from a much diverted approach and with moments when the sound alternates its direction to the changing aesthetic of System Of A Down as well as various metalcore acts of the last couple of years. The next thing worth mentioning about this album is the excellent drumming by Daniel Zeman almost achieving a likewise Lombardo level although with an inferiority in both technique and speed but with lots of potential. The vocalist of the band from the other hand possesses an almost disorganized essence due to the constant changes to his voice covering a broader range from melodic and clean singing to extreme metalcore and even black metal at times screams. Musically "Shadows" offers a large amount of aggression as well as enraptured groove and lots of weird experimental moments varying from interesting to totally indifferent. In general this album at moments held a massive attraction on me mostly when the aggression was taking over and at others it dishearteningly despoiled any good feeling about it mostly with the clean parts that didn’t match with my taste at all. So listen to it and make your own conclusions, personally I will stick to the albums of Grip Inc.\r\n
