HAUNT - Mind Freeze

Αν οι Haunt προσέξουν ένα-δύο πράγματα, θα μπορέσουν να ηγηθούν στη σύγχρονη
μελωδική heavy metal σκηνή. Κυκλοφορούν πολύ υλικό κατά καιρούς (LP’s, EP’s, Split’s),
ενώ ο αρχηγός της μπάντας, ο Trevor Church είναι ανακατεμένος και σε άλλες μπάντες
(Beastmaker, Hysteria). Αυτό σημαίνει ότι αν δεν προσέξουν, μπορεί να “κάψουν” τους
ευατούς τους από την υπερέκθεση, αλλά και να “στεγνώσουν” από ιδέες και να αρχίσουν
να επαναλαμβάνονται. Ευτυχώς αυτό δε συμβαίνει στο νέο τους άλμπουμ τους, “Mind
Freeze”.

Η νέα τους προσπάθεια συνεχίζει από’ κει που σταμάτησε το προηγούμενο άλμπουμ τους,
“If Icarus Could Fly”, και το καταπληκτικό “Mosaic Vision” EP, με το τελευταίο να είναι μέσα
στις 5 καλύτερες δουλειές του 2019. Όσοι έχουν ακούσει έστω και λίγο το συγκρότημα
ξέρουν ότι έχουν να κάνουν με παραδοσιακό metal που έχει εξαιρετικές μελωδίες, και
φωνητικά που δημιουργούν επιπλέον δραματουργικό τόνο, κάνοντας ορισμένα τραγούδια
του συγκροτήματος να φαντάζουν από τώρα κλασικά και διαχρονικά.

Το “Mind Freeze” σφύζει και αυτό από πολύ ωραίες μελωδίες, με μερικά κομμάτια του να
είναι πραγματικά καταπληκτικά. Όλος ο δίσκος αφήνει καλές εντυπώσεις σε έναν οπαδό
του κλασικού heavy metal, αλλά υπάρχουν κομμάτια όπως το “Saviors of Man” που είναι
μικρά διαμάντια, και που φαίνεται να μπορούν να αντέξουν στον χρόνο. Το ίδιο ισχύει και
για το καταπληκτικό ομώνυμο κομμάτι, “Mind Freeze”, αλλά και τα “Have No Fear” και
“Divide And Conquer”. Σε αυτά τα τραγούδια, πέρα από τη γνωστή δραματική χροιά του
Trevor Church, και τις μελαγχολικές power metal μελωδίες, παρατηρείται και η διακριτική
χρήση πλήκτρων, που απογειώνει τα κομμάτια. Πανέμορφο είναι και το “Light the Beacon”
σε πιο κλασικό Ηaunt ύφος.

Ο νέος δίσκος των Haunt συνεχίζει να εντυπωσιάζει με την απλότητα, τις μελωδίες και τη
δραματικότητα της μουσικής και των στίχων. Κάποιες φορές ίσως να χρειάζεται μια πιο
σύνθετη ανάπτυξη σε κάποια τραγούδια, για να προκαλεί ευχάριστες εκπλήξεις στον
ακροατή και για αλλαγή καθώς ακούει τον δίσκο, αλλά σίγουρα αυτό δεν είναι ενοχλητικό -
για τώρα τουλάχιστον.

Οι οπαδοί του μελωδικού heavy metal, αξίζει να έχουν εμπιστοσύνη στον Trevor Church,
που φαίνεται συνειδητοποίημενος οπαδός της σκηνής, και σε αυτή τη νέα προσπάθεια του
θα ακούσουν και πάλι μερικά εξαίσια κομμάτια, τις μελωδίες των οποίων θα
σιγοτραγουδούν για αρκετό καιρό.

If Haunt take notice of a couple of things, they will lead the modern melodic heavy metal
scene. They release a lot of material from time to time (LP's, EP's, Split's), while the band's
leader, Trevor Church, is involved in other bands as well (Beastmaker, Hysteria). This means
that if they do not pay attention, they can “burn-out"; themselves from over-exposure, but
also “dry up” in terms of ideas and start repeating themselves. Fortunately, this is not
happening in their new album, "Mind Freeze".

Their new endeavor continues from the point where their previous album, "If Icarus Could
Fl", and the stunning "Mosaic Vision" EP, stopped - with the latter being in the top 5
releases of 2019. Those who are familiar with the band, know that they are going to listen to
traditional heavy metal which has great melodies and tunes, and vocals that create extra
dramatic tone, rendering some of the band's songs classical and unaffected by time, even
from now.

"Mind Freeze" is also full of nice melodies, with some of its songs being really great. The
whole album leaves a good impression in general, and tracks such as "Saviors of Man" are
like small diamonds. The same holds for the amazing self-titled track "Mind Freeze", but also
"Have No Fear" and "Divide and Conquer" are very exciting. In addition to Trevor Church's
well-known dramatic tone and melancholic power metal melodies, these songs also feature
the discreet use of keyboards, which take the songs to a higher level. Very beautiful is the
first song of the record, "Light the Beacon" in a more traditional Haunt-style – “Light the
beacon of remembrance…”, what an amazing chorus.

Haunt's new album continues to impress with its simplicity, melodies and its dramatic music
and lyrics. Sometimes, a more sophisticated development for some of the songs may be
needed, in order to cause pleasant surprises to the listener and for a change as the record
evolves, but this is certainly not annoying- for now.

The fans of the melodic heavy metal sound deserve to trust Trevor Church, who seems a
conscious fan of the traditional metal scene, and in his new endeavor, one can find some
exquisite songs, whose melodies will sing for quite a long time.
