Hellheim - Heiðindómr ok mótgangr

\r\n Imagine yourself tied on a rock a few meters away from the shore, into the sea. It’s pouring rain and there’s a punishing storm reigning the place. The black cloud covered sky makes it difficult for you to see the enormous, Titanic sized drakkar heading your way. Uncontrolled and threatening. The horns howl, the berzerker screams make your fear grow until its great mass pulverises you in the end. The rest of your journey is not in physical form anymore.

\r\n That, among others, was one of the many visions I had designed within me while listening to the amazing new Hellheim album. I will not play it mr "knowitall", not with Hellheim. I haven’t been a fan till a few days ago. But what I’m listening to here is music of immense impact, quality, atmosphere. The band’s new guitarist paints over grey textures with talent and strong leads that have a real role in the songs. He sharpens the corners with guitar themes that blend in perfectly, his work is astonishing the least to say. What really sent me to the depths of hell was the use of the so called french horn, giving a warlike attitude to the already battle igniting songs. Its sound is massive, punishing. Hellheim’s black metal is enriched with the pagan element you desire but it’s not ruined with silly melodies or childish dance themes. There is some excellent continuity linking the tracks and at times you forget you’re listening to music. It rather feels like you’re living in their wolrd. As if a new reality just kicked in.

\r\n "Heiðindómr ok mótgangr" is an exquisite example of meaningful music, touching the borders of the soundtrack spectrum but without the use of fake effects. Their evolution, their complete indifference towards normal structures labels them instantly as genuine artists. This is art that strikes directly at the soul and scars it, creating original tension. Do not let this slip away even if you’re not a fan of extreme music. Just open your mind, ears and let go. The drakkar is going to crush you anyway..\r\n
