At last, the first full length release by Jex Thoth has reached me. The first effort by the band has been released under the name “Totem” back in 2007, and was the selftitled ep. After this release they changed their name to Jex Thoth and released a split 7’’ with the lengedary Pagan Altar. And At last this year the band released their first full length release, via I Hate Records again.
\r\nJex Thoth is a California based band and their music is an alchemistic mixture of 70’s psychedelic rock with intensive doom metal and protometal elements. If I had to name some bands, I can describe Jex Thoth’s music as a mixture of the lengedary Coven (US) , the darker side of Jefferson airplane as well as Sabbath laden guitas and in specific parts, there is a referance to some Woodstock – era bands, like Santana.
\r\nIn the twelve tracks that the cd features, of course I can pick “Equinox Suite” that splits into 4 different tracks, with many pshycedelic sounds, while the whole album owns the mystical sound of the moog organ. As we said before, the guitars sound more sabbath than sabbath but the mesmerising voice of Jex is the key element in my opinion.
\r\nJex Thoth according to my opinion, provide us with a incredibly mysterious trip through their music, for me the listening of the album was a real experience. Probably to some readers that do not dig the darker side of the 70’s the album would sound weird, but to the other who still dig the 70’s, I m sure they will found a diamond of the 70’s made in the year 2008.
