Joviac - Here and Now

Είχαμε γράψει στο τμήμα των νέων για τους Φινλανδούς Joviac και το δεύτερο τους άλμπουμ "Here and Now" που θα κυκλοφορήσει στις 3 Απριλίου του 2020. Πρόκειται για τη μπάντα του frontman Viljami Jupiter Wenttola που παίζει τις κιθάρες και τα πλήκτρα, ενώ στο μπάσο είναι ο Antti Varjanne και ο Rudy Fabritius στα drums. Όποιος είχε ακούσει το ομώνυμο ντεμπούτο τους το 2017, και το single “State of Mind” του 2018, δεν θα απογοητευτεί αφού οι μελωδίες και τα ρεφρέν του συγκροτήματος είναι ακόμα εδώ, και μάλιστα πιο δουλεμένα και ευκολομνημόνευτα.

Το συγκρότημα έχει τη βάση του στο progressive metal, αλλά όχι ως προς την πολυπλοκότητα, αλλά τις ανανεωτικο-μελαγχολικές μελωδίες που έβγαλε αυτή η σκηνή. Ουσιαστικά πρόκειται για μουσική για κάποιον που μέσα στο φθινόπωρο ή το χειμώνα κάθεται μόνος του και ατενίζει με τις ώρες τη θάλασσα, με τις σκέψεις και την ηρεμία να εναλλάσσονται συνέχεια. Οι μελωδίες του δίσκου βοηθούν τον ακροατή να ταξιδέψει, να νοσταλγήσει στο παρελθόν αλλά και να δει με άλλη ματιά το μέλλον του.

Υπάρχουν μερικά τραγούδια στο δίσκο που πετυχαίνουν τον παραπάνω στόχο με σχεδόν ονειρικό τρόπο. Τα “Crossfire” και “Fade Into The Light” δεν θα μπορούσαν να είναι καλύτερη συντροφιά για κάποιον που θέλει να χαθεί σε μελωδίες και να βγει ανανεωμένος μέσα από τη μουσική. Το “Straws” είναι επίσης καλό – απλοϊκό αλλά καλό. Η κορυφαία όμως στιγμή του δίσκου είναι το ομώνυμο κομμάτι “Here And Now”, το πιο progressive κομμάτι του δίσκου, όπου οι μελωδίες του θυμίζουν τις καλύτερες και πιο θρυλικές εποχές του progressive metal.

Όσοι αγάπησαν τα μελωδικά-κιθαριστικά σημεία των Dream Theater/Liquid Tension Experiment της δεκαετίας του ‘90, τη δραματικότητα των Pain of Salvation του “Remedy Lane”, αλλά και τον λυρισμό των Enchant, αξίζει να ασχοληθούν με το άλμπουμ αυτό. Από τα νέα συγκροτήματα, θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε πως είναι στην ίδια κατηγορία/γενιά με τους Xilla και τους Crea. Δηλαδή μπάντες που προσέχουν ιδιαίτερα τις μελωδίες τους, δίνουν μεγάλη έμφαση στο συναίσθημα με τελικό στόχο ο ακροατής να ζήσει μια μικρή περιπέτεια ακούγοντας τον δίσκο – με τις χαρές, τις λύπες, τη μελαγχολία και την αισιοδοξία που μπορεί να κρύβει μια τέτοια περιπέτεια.

We had written about Joviac from Finland in the news section, and that their second album "Here and Now" is going to be released on April 3, 2020. It is the band of Viljami Jupiter Wenttola, Joviac’s frontman, playing all guitars and keyboards, while Antti Varjanne is on the bass and Rudy Fabritius on drums. Anyone who has heard their self-titled debut in 2017, and their 2018 single "State of Mind" will not be disappointed, as the band's melodies and choruses are still here, and are even more neat and memorable.

The band is based on progressive metal, not in terms of complexity or technical playing, but the refreshing/melancholic melodies that this genre has produced, over all these years. Basically, one can think of Joviac as music for someone who sits alone in an autumn or winter afternoon, and gazes at the sea for hours, with thoughts and tranquility alternating in his mind. The album's melodies help the listener to travel, feel nostalgic for the past and look at his future from a different point of view.

There are some songs on the album that accomplish the above goal in an almost dreamlike way. "Crossfire" and "Fade Into The Light" could not be a better companion for someone who wants to get lost in melodies and come out through music refreshed and rejuvenated. “Straws” is also good - simplistic but good. But the highlight of the album is its self-titled track "Here And Now", the most progressive track on the album, where its melodies reminiscent of the best and most legendary progressive metal eras.

Those who loved the melodic guitar parts of Dream Theater/Liquid Tension Experiment in the 90s, the dramatic style of Pain of Salvation, and the lyricism of bands like Enchant, should listen to this album. Regarding newer bands, we could say that Joviac are in the same category/generation with Xilla and Crea. That is, bands that pay special attention to their melodies, giving emphasis to the emotion behind the music, having as an ultimate goal to provide to the listener a small adventure via their music – with all the joys, sorrows, melancholy and optimism that such an adventure can conceal.
