MINDLESS SINNER - Poltergeist

Heavy metal lives its second youth. In addition to all these new bands, we also have the heroes of the past, who want a second chance, and they don't want to miss the revival of the metal sound.

A special and a good case that follows the previous instance is the Swedish band Mindless Sinner, who was never considered to be a big heavy metal name in their early days. The “Master of Evil” EP in 83, and their first LP, “Turn on the Power” in 86, had some good moments (such as the title tracks or “Screaming For Mercy” that were great), but as a whole, the work was rather mediocre. I personally found their 3 rd LP, "Missin' Pieces" back in 1989, when the band changed its name to Mindless, very good, but many fans didn 't like it. It was more melodic, close enough to Leatherwolf' s second album. And while they disbanded after that, and were forgotten by everyone, they returned in 2015 with "The New Messiah" LP, an amazing classic heavy metal album, much better than their 80s work. Is their 4th album, "Poltergeist" that good too?

The truth is that the record is good, but unfortunately a few steps behind "The New Messiah". "The New Messiah" had an incredible simplicity, and it was really like listening to fresh and new metal, with the air and feeling of old and classic heavy metal. In its new endeavour, the band has "pitched up" its songs and rhythms. Perhaps someone can see similarities with Helloween in their "Master of the Rings" era or Hammerfall. The band is trying to enrich its sound and the songs, and it's not a bad change, but sometimes a "full" and more modern production is overwhelming and tires out the listener when attempting to listen to the album all at once. Moreover, it does not bring out that spontaneity and the plain heavy metal feeling that their previous work and sound had.

There are very good melodies in this album, and Christer Göransson's vocals are great once again. The choruses are incredibly melodic and easy to remember. Tracks, such as the amazing "Valkyrie", as well as "Rewind the Future" and "Altar of The King", will appeal to all heavy/power metal fans. Of course, there are plenty of other good tracks, such as "World οf Madness" and "The Road to Nowhere".

It's worth for a fan of the European heavy/power metal scene to listen to the new release of Mindless Sinner. It has more power metal elements than their previous attempt, it has a more modern or “richer” sound, which sometimes gives extra points to the album, but other times, it takes away a few points.

Το heavy metal περνά τη δεύτερη νιότη του. Πέρα από τις πολλές νέες μπάντες, έχουμε και τους παλιούς ήρωες που θέλουν μια δεύτερη ευκαιρία, και δεν θέλουν να χάσουν αυτήν την αναγέννηση του metal ήχου.

Ειδική και ωραία περίπτωση οι Σουηδοί Mindless Sinner που ποτέ δεν θεωρήθηκαν μεγάλο όνομα του heavy metal στα νιάτα τους. Το “Master of Evil ΕΡ” του ’83, και το πρώτο τους LP, “Turn On the Power” του ’86, είχαν καλές στιγμές (με τα ομώνυμα κομμάτια αντίστοιχα να είναι υπέροχα), αλλά σαν συνολικές δουλειές είναι μάλλον μέτριες. Το “Missin' Pieces” του 1989, που η μπάντα άλλαξε όνομα σε Mindless, προσωπικά το βρήκα πολύ καλό, αλλά σε αρκετούς δεν άρεσε. Ήταν πιο μελωδικό, αρκετά κοντά στον δεύτερο δίσκο των Leatherwolf. Και ενώ είχαν διαλύσει και ξεχαστεί από όλους, επανέρχονται με το “Τhe Νew Μessiah” του 2015, ένα καταπληκτικό άλμπουμ κλασικού heavy metal, πολύ ανώτερο από όλες τις 80’s δουλειές τους. Είναι άραγε το 4 ο άλμπουμ τους, “Poltergeist”, τόσο καλό;

Η αλήθεια είναι ότι ο δίσκος είναι καλός, αλλά δυστυχώς λίγα σκαλιά πιο κάτω το “Τhe Νew Μessiah”. Το “Τhe Νew Μessiah” είχε μια απίστευτη απλότητα, και ήταν πραγματικά σαν να ακούς φρέσκο και καινούργιο metal, με την στόφα του παλιού και κλασικού heavy metal. Στη νέα του προσπάθεια, το συγκρότημα “ανεβάζει” αρκετά τα τραγούδια, γίνονται ίσως πιο Helloween-ικοί κάποιες φορές, περιόδου “Master of the Rings”, ή πιο Hammerfall-ικοί άλλες φορές. Δεν είναι άσχημη αυτή η αλλαγή εμπλουτισμού του ήχου τους και των κομματιών τους, αλλά κάπου η πιο “γεμάτη” και μοντέρνα παραγωγή κουράζει, και δε βγάζει αυτόν τον αυθορμητισμό και το πιο λιτό heavy metal συναίσθημα που είχε η προηγούμενη δουλειά τους και ο ήχος τους.

Σε όλον τον δίσκο υπάρχουν διάσπαρτες πολύ καλές μελωδίες, και τα φωνητικά του Christer Göransson είναι εξαιρετικά για μια ακόμη φορά. Η καλύτερη δουλειά του δίσκου ειναι τα ρεφρέν, που είναι απίστευτα μελωδικά και εντυπωσιάζουν εύκολα. Κομμάτια σαν το καταπληκτικό “Valkyrie”, και τα υπέροχα “Rewind The Future” και “Altar Of The King” θα αρέσουν σε όλο το heavy/power metal κοινό. Βέβαια, πολύ καλές στιγμές υπάρχουν και σε πολλά άλλα κομμάτια, σαν τα “World Of Madness” και “The Road To Nowhere”.

Αξίζει ένας οπαδός του παλιού ευρωπαϊκού heavy/power metal να ασχοληθεί με τη νέα κυκλοφορία των Mindless Sinner. Έχει περισσότερα power metal στοιχεία απο την προηγούμενη προσπάθεια τους, έχει πιο σύγχρονο ήχο, και αυτό σε κάποια σημεία τους προσθέτει πόντους, αλλά σε κάποια τους αφαιρεί.
