REFLECTION - When Shadows Fall
Reflection - When Shadows Fall
The Greek – Malta based outfit, Reflection have return to make the difference, I mean that I consider the “When Shadows Fall” album, one of the best releases of this genre. Of course the contribution of Leo Stivala (Vocalist of Forsaken), gives to Reflection a different status.
\r\nMusically, the album is a very good example of well – played and well- produced Epic / Heavy Doom but with a little bit of complexity in Reflection’s compositions, but this fact doesn’t affect the whole album in a negative way. If I could pick three bands to give you the way that the album sounds, I would definitely pick Forsaken (due too Stivala’s vocals), the mighty Solitude Aeturnus and a touch of early Memento Mori efforts. But I would state that Reflection is not a rip off of these bands, there’s something deeper in the way they sound, the guys have a musical identity. Of course their influences include the previously quoted bands but every band has influences.
\r\nThe album can be described as a mid tempo Doom Metal album, with many cuts and of course riffs influenced by the great John Perez meet Mike Wead School. Very impressive and wise – composed are also the lead melodies and breaks of the guitar work. From the view of vocals Leo Stivala is known for his vocal abilities, but I think that Leo ‘s vocals is getting better and better through the years. In many parts there are also multiple vocal lines and many chorus vocals. The rhythm section sounds solid as wall and I ve been impressed by the drummer’s playing. On “When Shadows Fall” there is an intense presence of keyboards but in the background, just to fill and make atmosphere.
\r\nThe Production of the album satisfy my ears in many ways, every instrument can be heard clearly. I ve been also impressed by the last track under the title “Mistress Of Sea” that is an orchestral version of the same track that exist also in the album in an “electric” version.
\r\nIf you are into Epic Doom metal scene and bands like Solitude Aeturnus, Candlemass, Memento Mori, I highly recommend this album, if you are not an fan of the scene, by hearing this album, you will change your mind.
