Trident Winter - Trident Winter
The Australian Trident Winter were formed back in February 2005 when most of their members were studying at the "School Of Rock". As their bio mentions, they have performed for two years, opening for some local bands, while their devotion to bring back the heavy metal style of 80s, made them want to conquer the top. Their first moves in order to do this, was to hire drummer Shinok Mizuno and bassist Matt Bailey in order to allow Simon Hallett, who was handling both mic and low end, take the position of the frontman of the band. Musically they are trying to sound like a classic heavy metal band, such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, with a more modern approach. There are some heavy power riffs (for example "Kings Of The World"), some double solo guitars and some acoustic ones like in "Taste of Fire" track. I previously mention the word "trying" because this EP is a total failure. Annoying high pitched vocals by a singer (if we could call him so) that the only thing he does, is screaming with no point at all. Sometimes he reminds me of James Labrie’s way of singing, with the difference that, Dream Theater’s singer, knows how to handle his high octaves. Another minus is the performance of the musicians. I am sure that their teachers at the "School Of Rock" will not be proud of them. You can listen that the guitarists struggle to play even their own riffs, while their drummer’s playing reminds me of school bands, with no attitude and absolute childish approach and breaks. Moving on to the production side, I couldn’t expect something more amateur than this, sounding like a home made one. Some good ideas here and there and an average song ("Rockin’ Rebel") fill this EP. The only thing that the band should consider is, to use their love for metal in a more productive and musical way and of course to fire their singer, or at least forbid him, to scream with his annoying voice, all the time.
