ASPHYX @ AN Club

\r\n

\r\nIt was the motto back in my\r\nthrash days “white Reebok sneakers and an Asphyx tee” –these Dutch guys you see\r\nwere always highly respected not only in the death metal scene. Anyway, the\r\ntime for us to follow this dressing code had finally arrived as we were able to\r\nwelcome “death the brutal way”. Not only because that is the title of Asphyx’s\r\nlatest release, but also because the description perfectly suits the happenings\r\non that lovely evening on Greek ground in the catacombs of An Club. Ok, enough\r\nwith the bullshit now.\r\n

\r\nWith opening acts such as\r\nDead  Congregation, Obduktion and The\r\nSource, the line up was more than ok for the 20euros of the ticket price. Even\r\nthough I hate to say this, I have to apologize to the two first bands that I\r\nwasn’t in the venue on time to watch them play. Shitty thing I tell you,\r\nbecause the local support bands are those you shouldn’t miss on these gigs.\r\nOtherwise, whats the meaning in playing?\r\n

\r\nAnastasis and the other guys of\r\nDead Congregation have been cooking something really hot for years now. Some\r\nmay not have noticed them yet, but let me tell you that their releases become\r\nsold out in no time and are precious possessions for some German deathsters\r\n(talking by personal experience).   Even though their sound is not the easiest to\r\nlisten to for those who are not used to it (yes, damn it, I’m talking about\r\nme!), the reaction of the audience proved that DC can do what they do equally\r\ngood on stage as on their recording. No way not to give an extra praise to the\r\ndrummer who totally kicked ass \r\n

\r\nTime was passing by and the club\r\nstarted to fill. The people –even not as many as hoped for- were enough to\r\nhighly increase the temperature in the venue. With Asphyx entering the stage\r\nand upon Paul Baayens first riffs the mosh pits started to form and we had the\r\nchance to enjoy a gig by a band that played perfect but without any stilted\r\nprofessionalism.  It was obvious that\r\nAsphyx still deliver this kind of music because they really like it and not\r\nbecause some guy in a suit told them “hey guys, why don’t you write another\r\nAsphyx album so that we get some cash in”. The old songs thrilled us, the new\r\nones gave us high expectations for the forthcoming album. Endless headbanging,\r\nthe coolest grunts by Martin, beers and a very bonded band that enjoyed the\r\ncontact with its fans. I don’t have to write much more; whoever was there knows\r\n(hailz to the guys of Metal Defiance who brought them over just on time) and\r\nwhoever wasn’t should see to be there next time (until then, check out the\r\nbonus DVD on the new album with live footage from the Party San Festival 2007).\r\nOLD SCHOOL DEATH METAL, just that.\r\n
