METSATOLL - Hiiekoda
METSATOLL - Hiiekoda
\r\n Now I have this big question about this promo that comes with much delay for a review since it was a 2004’s release and which it was re-released in 2007 only in vinyl format and in particular from what I saw in limited copies. While I must also add that not too way back in 2008 they released their last and third full length album "Iivakivi".
\r\n Anyway for those who do not know this band, Metsatöll are hailing from Tallinn, Estonia and were formed in 1998 from Markus, Faktor and Andrus. First of all the cover of the album reminded me some medieval gravures with the warriors killing the mythical, three-headed beast and as you understand Metsatöll are into the folk metal groups and to be more precise their music is more folk than metal. With a pile of traditional instruments from back pipes and flutes up to acoustic guitars and bombastic vocals and lyrics sang in Estonian, "Hiiekoda" (that means the giant’s cabin) offers for most of its part an up tempo metallic folkish foray that sometimes sound a little bit of facile and others dynamic and pretty engaging and also entertaining. The back pipes bestow a very beautiful color to the sound as well as the flute although the latter in some points sounds kind of tedious or even irritating. The electric guitars from the other hand occasionally have a very thrashy sound which grants to the album a far larger interest.
\r\n Generally, even if cheerful folk metal is not the style of music that I will select to listen to, this is not a bad album. All those of you who like this kind of sound, check them out. This is a pure underground band but if you like Kopriklaani, I see no reason why you won’t like these Estonians as well!\r\n
