Motley Crue - Saints of Los Angeles
Motley Crue - Saints of Los Angeles
\r\n"This city full of plastic\r\nangels will seduce you. Welcome to\r\nLos Angeles... "\r\n
\r\n
\r\nLet’s begin with some essential\r\ninformation. "Saints Of Los\r\nAngeles" is based on a book\r\ncalled "The Dirt", which\r\nnarrates band’s history from\r\noblivion to zenith of their glory\r\nand then from decline through an\r\noverdose of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll\r\nto their current turnaround. Therefore,\r\nit would be an essential prerequisite\r\nfor you to be reading the lyrics,\r\nwhile you will be listening to the\r\nsongs. If you are searching for a\r\nband that deserves to be honored\r\nwith a rock-way-of-life prize, don’t\r\nlook any further. The mighty MC were\r\nresponsible for influencing hundreds\r\nof other groups worldwide, for selling\r\nover 40 million copies back in the\r\nday and for performing about a dozen\r\ntimes around the planet the most\r\nenergetic lives this world have ever\r\nseen.\r\n
\r\n
\r\nFor me SOLA is like the real follow\r\nup to their 1989 monster of an album "Dr\r\nFeelgood", as MC94 did not\r\ninclude Vince Neil (Corabi on vocals), "Generation\r\nSwine" was too bad for words,\r\nand "New Tatoo" without\r\nTommy Lee was just a pass. All these\r\nwere taking place until the year\r\nof grace 2008, which found them back\r\ntogether again and in top form. From\r\nthe first listen I thought SOLA was\r\nmore like a Nikki Sixx project than\r\na MC one. However, that feeling changed\r\nover time as I realized that it is\r\nactually their classic sound mixed\r\nwith some modern elements. Let me\r\nput it straight with an example: "Face\r\nDown In The Dirt" comes from\r\ntheir "Too Fast For Love" era\r\nbringing back that raw and aggressive\r\nattitude, but with an updated sound. \r\n
\r\n
\r\nAs it has been mentioned above,\r\neach song is about certain experiences\r\nlike "Down At The Whisky" that\r\nrefers to the famous rock club where\r\nMC were performing after their arrival\r\nin L.A. Neil sings "We never\r\nmade a dime, but God we had a good\r\ntime... L.A girls they paid the\r\nrent while we got drunk on Sunset\r\nStrip", and please don’t\r\ntell me you’ve never heard\r\nof Sunset Strip before... One\r\nof the highlights this one. Other\r\nfront-page songs are the "Mutherfucker\r\nOf The Year" with its fine\r\nbacking vocals and a nice flowing\r\nchorus, "The Animal In Me" with\r\nits Sixx A.M feel all over it and\r\na superb drumming by Lee, "Just\r\nAnother Psycho" built upon\r\nhuge riffs, "Chicks = Trouble" that\r\nfocuses on their divorces, and "White\r\nTrash Circus" ("we’re\r\nbusy getting high, another lawsuit\r\nanother arrest") that comes\r\nmarching in taking advantage of its\r\nnatty chorus. For last I’ve\r\nleft the two tracks that could belong\r\nto their heydays set list: "Saints\r\nOf Los Angeles" and "Goin’ Out\r\nSwingin’" are two fine\r\nexamples of what this band is capable\r\nof. The s/t song is probably one\r\nof their best so far and certainly\r\none of the best of the year 2008.\r\nA song of anthemic proportions. The\r\nsecond one it’s like watching\r\nfireworks in the night. The perfect\r\nchoice for the curtain’s fall\r\nin which the gang of four takes no\r\nprisoners... \r\n
\r\n
\r\nI forgot to say something about\r\nthe production. Bob Rock may not\r\nbe around so the big in your face\r\nsound may seem long gone, but "SOLA" goes\r\nwith the tide and it is modernized\r\nyet heavy, as Sixx A.M also was last\r\nyear. Neil vocals are in a very good\r\nshape, Sixx is on fire, Mars contributes\r\nin many songs (in the songwriting\r\ndepartment) and Lee’s creative\r\nperformance is equal to his MC94\r\none. \r\n
\r\n
\r\nWithout being anything\r\nreally earthshaking, this comeback\r\nhopefully signals the beginning of\r\na new era. "SOLA", perhaps, isn’t a classic but\r\ncertainly is their best album since\r\n1989. For any late fans of the Crue\r\nI have one note to make: along with\r\nthis one, go and grab their 3 classics "Shout\r\nAt The Devil", "Theatre\r\nOf Pain" and "Dr Feelgood". \r\n
\r\n
\r\nYou can thank me\r\nlater. \r\n
