HEAVY METAL SUBGENRES ΚΑΤΑ ΤΗΝ ΔΕΚΑΕΤΙΑ ΤΟΥ ‘80 – ΟΡΟΛΟΓΙΑ, ΑΠΑΡΧΕΣ, ΝΟΗΜΑΤΟΔΟΤΗΣΗ ΚΑΙ ΜΕΤΕΠΕΙΤΑ ΕΞΕΛΙΞΗ - ΜΕΡΟΣ 1ο

ΕΙΣΑΓΩΓΗ

 

Η φράση «heavy metal» χρησιμοποιείται ως μουσικός όρος, προκειμένου να περιγράψει ένα είδος μουσικής που γεννιέται στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του ’60². Η χρήση αυτού του μουσικού όρου γενικεύεται στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του ’70 και θεωρείται παραπλήσιος με τους όρους hard rock και heavy rock που υπήρχαν εκείνη την εποχή. Παρατηρούμε δηλαδή αυτούς τους όρους να χρησιμοποιούνται κατά τη δεκαετία του ’70 (και στη δεκαετία του ’80, αλλά όλο και σπανιότερα) εναλλάξ προκειμένου να περιγράψουν τη μουσική ορισμένων συγκροτημάτων, τα οποία θεωρούνται ότι παίζουν ένα παρακλάδι της ευρύτερης rock μουσικής. Από την δεκαετία του ’80 και μετά πάντως, το heavy metal αρχίζει να θεωρείται ξεχωριστό είδος μουσικής³ και καθώς διευρύνει τους μουσικούς του ορίζοντες, αρχίζει να αποκτά τα δικά του subgenres (παρακλάδια/υποείδη, π.χ. thrash metal, power metal, glam metal, progressive metal κλπ).

Σύγχυση επικρατεί για το πότε, από ποιους και για ποιους άρχισαν να χρησιμοποιούνται οι όροι που περιγράφουν αυτά τα παρακλάδια του heavy metal. Χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα αποτελούν τα, κατά τ’άλλα ενημερωμένα, άρθρα στην ηλεκτρονική εγκυκλοπαίδεια Wikipedia. Ενώ περιγράφουν με λεπτομέρειες (ακριβείς τις περισσότερες φορές) τα τεχνικά/ηχητικά και γενικότερα, στυλιστικά χαρακτηριστικά του κάθε υποείδους, τα κυριότερα συγκροτήματα και την ιστορία του, αδυνατούν να παράσχουν περισσότερες λεπτομέρειες σχετικά με την προέλευση του εκάστοτε όρου. Αντίστοιχα, τα διάφορα, επίσης αξιόλογα, αφιερώματα σε μουσικά περιοδικά, δεν βοηθούν ιδιαίτερα με την σειρά τους προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση. Την σύγχυση επιτείνουν τα τελευταία έτη, διάφορα βίντεο στο YouTube και γενικότερα στα social media, όπου ορισμένοι χρήστες επιχειρούν να αναδείξουν αυτό το θέμα, κάνοντας όμως ατεκμηρίωτες και ανακριβείς τελικά δηλώσεις, όπως θα φανεί από τα στοιχεία που θα παρατεθούν στη συνέχεια του άρθρου. Αντιστοίχως, η σύγχυση επεκτείνεται γενικότερα στο YouTube και καταλήγει πολλές φορές σε διαμάχες μεταξύ των σχολιαστών. Χαρακτηριστικά παραδείγματα, οι περιπτώσεις του πότε και από ποιους χρησιμοποιείται για πρώτη φορά ο όρος death metal, αν η τάδε μπάντα είναι ή δεν είναι black metal κλπ.

Να ξεκαθαρίσουμε πάντως ότι ως ερευνητικό εγχείρημα δεν είναι καθόλου εύκολο. Οι διάφοροι όροι που περιγράφουν τα παρακλάδια του heavy metal, δημιουργούνται κυρίως από μουσικοκριτικούς εκείνης της εποχής και ενίοτε από τους ίδιους τους μουσικούς ή/και τις δισκογραφικές εταιρείες. Έτσι, ο δυνητικός ερευνητής της υπόθεσης, προκειμένου να εξαγάγει υπεύθυνα συμπεράσματα, θα πρέπει να ανατρέξει σε εντυπωσιακά μεγάλο αριθμό μουσικών εντύπων εκείνης της εποχής (κυρίως κριτικές δίσκων και συνεντεύξεις) και μάλιστα από αρκετές διαφορετικές χώρες. Ενώ ταυτόχρονα πρέπει να λάβει υπόψη ακόμη και δελτία τύπου δισκογραφικών εταιρειών, flyers συναυλιών και γενικά, πάσης φύσεως έντυπο υλικό (δυσεύρετο κατά βάση).

Ο λόγοι που δημιουργούνται αυτοί οι μουσικοί όροι, είναι ουσιαστικά δύο. Ο αντικειμενικός λόγος ήταν διότι έπρεπε να εκφραστεί η ανάγκη αντιπροσωπευτικής περιγραφής του που κινούνταν πλέον το heavy metal, καθώς διευρυνόταν συνεχώς (ηχητικά και θεματολογικά). Ο δεύτερος λόγος, ήταν ο εμπορικός, η ανάγκη δηλαδή να παρουσιαστεί στο κοινό, κάτι φρέσκο και καινούριο, άρα ελκυστικό. Γεγονός πάντως είναι πως ήδη από το 1983 η γενικότερη εξέλιξη του heavy metal δημιουργούσε την ανάγκη επινόησης νέων όρων⁴.

Πρόθεση αυτού του άρθρου δεν είναι η εξαντλητική εξέταση του φαινομένου, όσο το να προσδιοριστεί με σαφήνεια το πότε αυτοί οι όροι αρχίζουν να είναι σε ευρεία χρήση και κυρίως, το τι εξέφραζαν τότε μουσικά και για ποιους καλλιτέχνες χρησιμοποιούνταν. Θέμα καίριας σημασίας κατά την γνώμη του γράφοντος, διότι από τα κείμενα που θα παρατεθούν, αποδεικνύεται πως σχεδόν σε όλες τις περιπτώσεις, οι όροι αυτοί εξέφραζαν άλλα πράγματα αρχικώς και άλλα εκφράζουν σήμερα. Λανθασμένη επίσης είναι η άποψη που εκφράζει την πεποίθηση πως τη δεκαετία του ’80 “όλα ήταν heavy metal”⁵ και πως οι όροι για τα παρακλάδια, αποκτούν ευρεία χρήση από τα 90s και μετά. Η έρευνα μας, καταδεικνύει πως οπωσδήποτε από την περίοδο 1983 - 84 ήταν σε συχνή χρήση οι κυριότεροι όροι που συναντούμε στα 90s.

Για την καλύτερη κατανόηση του κειμένου, ο αναγνώστης είναι απαραίτητο να αποδεσμεύσει το μυαλό του από την γνώση του σήμερα και να προσπαθήσει να μεταφερθεί στο παρελθόν. Στην εποχή όπου κάποια μουσικά είδη γεννιούνται και κάποιοι όροι χρησιμοποιούνται για πρώτη φορά προκειμένου να περιγράψουν αυτά τα είδη. Η κατανόηση επίσης του γεγονότος ότι οι εκάστοτε καλλιτέχνες δημιουργούν τη μουσική τους προκειμένου να εκφραστούν και η έκφραση τους πολλές φορές υπερβαίνει στενούς διαχωρισμούς ειδών μουσικής και περιχαρακώσεις. Τέλος, καίριας σημασίας είναι το γεγονός ότι αυτοί οι μουσικοί όροι που θα αναφέρουμε, δεν ήταν ούτε θεόσταλτοι, ούτε δημιουργημένοι από κάποια ακαδημία, ιερά εξέταση ή οτιδήποτε άλλο που θα οριοθετούσε τα πράγματα αυστηρά! Μουσικοί και οπαδοί τους δημιούργησαν και το αν κάποιος όρος καθιερώθηκε και κάποιος άλλος όχι, έχει να κάνει με το πόσο εν τέλει αγκαλιάστηκε και υιοθετήθηκε από τους λοιπούς μουσικούς και οπαδούς της σκηνής και κυρίως αν εξέφρασε την ανάγκη για να περιγράψει κάτι όντως νέο. Υπάρχουν όροι όπως blood metal, rogue metal, rape rock, space metal, monster metal, athletic rock κ.α. που δημιουργήθηκαν από διάφορα συγκροτήματα⁶ προκειμένου να περιγράψουν τη μουσική τους, αλλά ποτέ δεν απέκτησαν ευρεία χρήση. Όπως μπορεί κάποιος να κατανοήσει, ακόμη και οι όροι που εν τέλει καθιερώθηκαν, χρειάστηκαν τον χρόνο τους προκειμένου να γίνουν ευρέως αποδεκτοί.

Άρθρα του, ιστορικού και μουσικού περιεχομένου, καθώς και κριτικές βιβλίων, έχουν δημοσιευθεί σε διάφορες ιστοσελίδες και έντυπα (ενδ. Θέματα Ελληνικής Ιστορίας, Άβαλον των Τεχνών, Βιβλιόφιλοι Έδεσσας κ.α.)

4Αρκεί να σκεφτεί κανείς ότι εκείνη την χρονιά κυκλοφόρησαν τόσο το Pyromania των Def Leppard, όσο και το Show No Mercy των Slayer, δίσκοι που σίγουρα δεν μπορούν εύκολα να χωρέσουν κάτω από την ομπρέλα του ίδιου μουσικού όρου.

Για την έρευνα που πραγματοποιήθηκε, αξιοποιήθηκαν κάποιες ιστοσελίδες που αναφέρονται στο τέλος του άρθρου, στην παράθεση των πηγών, αλλά κυρίως, έντυπο υλικό (περιοδικά και fanzines), κατά βάση από τις ΗΠΑ (κατά κύριο λόγο) και το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο. Ο γράφων έχει στην κατοχή του έντυπο υλικό και από πολλές άλλες χώρες που όμως δεν μπόρεσαν να αξιοποιηθούν (πλην κάποιων ελαχίστων εξαιρέσεων) λόγω έλλειψης γνώσεως των αντίστοιχων γλωσσών. Θεωρούμε πάντως ότι το τελικό αποτέλεσμα των συμπερασμάτων μας δεν θα άλλαζε ριζικά, ακόμη και αν είχαν αξιοποιηθεί οι συγκεκριμένες πηγές, διότι γεγονός είναι, πως τον τόνο όσον αφορά τις τάσεις και την εξέλιξη της metal μουσικής σε όλα τα επίπεδα, την έδιναν κατά βάση οι ΗΠΑ και το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο. Αξιοποιήθηκε επίσης και ελληνικό έντυπο υλικό, αλλά εντελώς επικουρικά. Ο γράφων θα ήθελε τέλος να ευχαριστήσει τους Giles Lavery (τραγουδιστή των Warlord) και Βασίλη Κοιλάκο (πρώην κιθαρίστα των Wisdom) για την ευγενική παραχώρηση του αρχείου τους. Θα συνιστούσαμε στους αναγνώστες (ιδίως τους νεότερους) προτού εισέλθουν στο κυρίως μέρος του κειμένου, να ανατρέξουν στα αντίστοιχα λήμματα της Wikipedia, που αφορούν τα παρακλάδια της metal μουσικής (thrash, death κλπ) για να έχουν κατά νου τα κυριότερα συγκροτήματα και τα χαρακτηριστικά του κάθε παρακλαδιού/υποείδους, ώστε στη συνέχεια, ευχερώς να αντιληφθούν την διαφοροποίηση στη χρήση αυτών των όρων, που συνέβαινε τη δεκαετία του ‘80. Να διευκρινιστεί επίσης ότι τα περισσότερα αποσπάσματα που μεταφέρουμε από συνεντεύξεις, κριτικές δίσκων κλπ, τα αφήσαμε στην αρχική τους γλώσσα (αγγλικά) προκειμένου να αποδοθεί καλύτερα το νόημά τους. Τέλος, διευκρινίζουμε ότι τα στοιχεία που παραθέτουμε, είναι απλώς ενδεικτικά, με επιλογή μέσα από εκατοντάδες σελίδες έντυπου υλικού, κρίνοντας ότι θα πρέπει να παρατεθούν οι χαρακτηριστικότερες περιπτώσεις και όχι όλες, διότι θα κινδυνεύαμε αλλιώς να κουράσουμε τον αναγνώστη¹. Η έρευνα, όπως φαίνεται και από τον τίτλο, αφορά αποκλειστικά τους όρους που εμφανίζονται κατά την δεκαετία του ’80 προκειμένου να περιγράψουν τα παρακλάδια της metal μουσικής. Όροι που εμφανίζονται μεταγενέστερα² (δεκαετία ’90 κι εφεξής), δεν εξετάζονται. Το κείμενο αφιερώνεται στη Στελλίνα, η οποία γεννήθηκε κατά τη διάρκεια της συγγραφής του.

 

SPEED/POWER/THRASH/DEATH/BLACK METAL

Όσο κι αν φαίνεται περίεργο στον αναγνώστη, κατά τη δεκαετία του ‘80 οι συγκεκριμένες ‘’ταμπέλες’’ εμφανίζονται σχεδόν ταυτόχρονα και χρησιμοποιούνταν με μεγάλη επικάλυψη και δυσδιάκριτα όρια μεταξύ τους, προκειμένου να περιγράψουν διάφορες μπάντες και το είδος μουσικής που έπαιζαν. Πολλές φορές όπως θα διαπιστώσουμε παρακάτω, αυτοί οι όροι χρησιμοποιούνται εναλλάξ για τις ίδιες μπάντες, όχι μόνο σε διαφορετικά περιοδικά ή διαφορετικά κείμενα του ίδιου περιοδικού, αλλά ακόμη και μέσα στο ίδιο το εκάστοτε κείμενο! Αυτό είχε περάσει και στους οπαδούς, όπου αν π.χ. διαβάσει κανείς τη στήλη αλληλογραφίας (Penbangers) του βρετανικού περιοδικού Metal Forces, διαπιστώνει την ρευστότητα αυτών των όρων στο πως χρησιμοποιούνται για να περιγράψουν τις αγαπημένες τους μπάντες. Λόγω αυτής της ρευστότητας λοιπόν, θα εξετάσουμε αυτά τα υποείδη του metal όλα μαζί και παράλληλα θα προσπαθήσουμε να ερμηνεύσουμε τις έστω λεπτές διαφορές που είχαν τότε μεταξύ τους εννοιολογικά και να δούμε πως επανανοηματοδοτήθηκαν στη συνέχεια για να καταλήξουν στις σημερινές τους έννοιες. Μια ερμηνεία που θα μπορούσα να δώσω για την ταυτόχρονη ύπαρξη πολλών διαφορετικών όρων που στην ουσία περιγράφουν την ίδια μουσική, είναι το ότι ο εκάστοτε όρος ίσως αναπτύχθηκε αρχικά σε διαφορετική γεωγραφική περιοχή (π.χ. άλλος όρος χρησιμοποιούμενος από την underground σκηνή του San Francisco και άλλος όρος στην αντίστοιχη σκηνή της Νέας Υόρκης κλπ), θέμα που σίγουρα θα άξιζε να ερευνηθεί.

Ξεκινώντας με τον όρο speed metal, μπορούμε να παρατηρήσουμε πως εκείνη την εποχή χρησιμοποιείται για οποιαδήποτε μπάντα παίζει σε tempos αισθητά πιο γρήγορα από τη μέση heavy metal μπάντα³. Σε μεγάλο βαθμό λοιπόν ταυτίζεται τότε με τον όρο thrash metal⁴, όπου βλέπουμε πολλές από τις κλασικές πλέον μπάντες του είδους να αναφέρονται τότε ως speed. Ο όρος κρατάει αυτή την έννοια μέχρι και το τέλος της δεκαετίας του ’80 αν και υποχωρεί σημαντικά ως προς τη χρήση του, λόγω ακριβώς της μεγάλης χρήσης του όρου thrash metal, ο οποίος ήταν πληρέστερος εννοιολογικά προκειμένου να περιγράψει τη μουσική ταυτότητα αυτών των συγκροτημάτων, χωρίς να εστιάζει μόνο σε ένα χαρακτηριστικό (ταχύτητα). Πλέον (βλ. από δεκαετία του ’90 και μετά) ο όρος speed metal χρησιμοποιείται σπάνια, κυρίως για να περιγράψει όχι τόσο κάποιες νέες μπάντες, όσο παλιές μπάντες όπου δεν χωρούν απολύτως ούτε στην ταμπέλα thrash metal, ούτε στην ταμπέλα power metal. Χαρακτηριστικές περιπτώσεις αποτελούν μπάντες όπως οι Exciter και οι Agent Steel. Συνήθως η χρήση του όρου speed συνδυάζεται με κάποιο δεύτερο συνθετικό (π.χ. speed/power, speed/thrash).

Ο όρος power metal παρουσιάζει το μεγαλύτερο ερευνητικό ενδιαφέρον λόγω της σχεδόν πλήρους μετάλλαξης που υπέστη κατά τη διάρκεια των ετών. Στο ξεκίνημα του, περιγράφει όλες τις μπάντες που παίζουν πιο δυναμικά από την μέση heavy metal μπάντα. Αυτό το ‘’δυναμικά’’, όντας αρκετά αόριστο ως προς το πως εκφράζεται, κάνει τον όρο ασαφή και πολύ συμπεριληπτικό στο ξεκίνημά του. Έτσι λοιπόν βλέπουμε να αποκαλούν power metal, μπάντες όπως οι Manowar, Virgin Steele, Jag Panzer, Metallica, Raven, Voivod, Venom, Liege Lord, Helloween, Grave Digger, Exodus, Anthrax και οτιδήποτε άλλο μπορεί κάποιος να φανταστεί! Παρατηρούμε πάντως σε κάποιες από τις πρώιμες αναφορές που θα παραθέσουμε, να γίνεται ένας διαχωρισμός και ουσιαστικά ο όρος power metal να ταυτίζεται με το thrash metal, άρα να μην δρα τόσο αόριστα και συμπεριληπτικά. Μάλιστα η χρήση του όρου power metal φαίνεται να κυριαρχεί το 1984 σε σχέση με τον όρο thrash, για μπάντες που πλέον τις θεωρούμε κλασικό thrash! Αυτό μάλλον έχει την εξήγησή του στο ότι ο όρος power metal είναι κατά πάσα πιθανότητα παλαιότερος, αφού κατά την έρευνά μας τον εντοπίζουμε από το 1982, ενώ ο όρος thrash metal εντοπίζεται προς τα τέλη του 1983. Χωρίς να μπορώ να το στηρίξω σε ισχυρές αποδείξεις, θεωρώ ωστόσο πως ο όρος power metal εμφανίζεται αρχικά ως αντίδραση στην χρήση του όρου heavy metal για τις μπάντες του L.A. (τις μετέπειτα αποκληθείσες glam metal/pop metal μπάντες). Θέλοντας δηλαδή να δείξουν τη ‘’δύναμη’’ του power metal σε αντίθεση με το εύπεπτο heavy metal του L.A. Ως σχετικές ενδείξεις αυτής της θεωρίας, αναφέρω το γεγονός ότι οι Metallica, οι οποίοι προέρχονταν από το L.A., ήταν από τους πρώτους (ή και οι πρώτοι) που χρησιμοποίησαν τον όρο power metal σε κάρτες που είχαν τυπώσει (βλ. παρακάτω). Επίσης η περίεργη φράση ‘’the death of heavy metal, the birth of power metal’’, που χρησιμοποίησαν οι Manowar (οι οποίοι πρωτοστάτησαν στον πόλεμο του ‘’true metal’’

3 Προκειμένου να υπάρξει καλύτερη κατανόηση από τους αναγνώστες, ως μέτρο σύγκρισης για τις ηχητικές διαφοροποιήσεις που επιφέρουν τα νέα παρακλάδια του metal, ορίζουμε ως μέση heavy metal μπάντα, οτιδήποτε κινείται ηχητικά κοντά στους Judas Priest, Saxon και Accept, ως τις πλέον χαρακτηριστικές μπάντες του είδους εκείνη την εποχή.

Επίσης δεν γνωρίζω αν είναι συμπτωματικό ή όχι, αλλά ο πρώτος ελληνικός thrash metal δίσκος (Flames ‘’Made In Hell’’), στην αυθεντική του έκδοση, το βινύλιο είναι χωρισμένο σε speed side και power side (πληροφορία αντληθείσα από το ελληνικό περιοδικό Iron, στο ειδικό τεύχος για την ιστορία του ελληνικού heavy metal).

εναντίον του ‘’false metal’’¹) για το flyer της συναυλίας τους, αρχές του 1983 (βλ. παρακάτω στις φωτογραφίες), θεωρώ πως συνηγορεί υπέρ της άποψης που ανέφερα. Τέλος, η συνέντευξη του τότε κιθαρίστα τους, Ross The Boss στο περιοδικό Kick Ass, τεύχος 30, του 1985 (με την αναφορά σε Manowar και Metallica ως power metal και την αντίθεση σε μπάντες όπως οι Motley Crue) ενισχύει αυτη τη θέση. Πάντως κατά τα έτη 1986 και 1987 ο όρος power metal υποχωρεί υπερβολικά, λόγω της εκπληκτικής διάδοσης του όρου thrash metal και αρχίζει σιγά σιγά να εμφανίζεται εκ νέου από το 1988 κι εφεξής, πλησιάζοντας πλέον το νόημα που έχει σήμερα. Κάτι δηλαδή γρηγορότερο και δυναμικότερο από το κλασικό heavy metal, αλλά πολύ μελωδικότερο από το thrash. Τον Ιούνιο του 1990 άλλωστε κυκλοφορεί το πρώτο τεύχος του ελληνικού περιοδικού Power Metal, με περιεχόμενο ξεκάθαρα προς την κατεύθυνση του πως αντιλαμβανόμαστε σήμερα το power metal. Υπήρξε πάντως κι ένα περιοδικό, επίσης με το όνομα Power Metal, το οποίο κυκλοφορούσε στις ΗΠΑ και φαίνεται ότι αγνοούσε όλες αυτές τις παλινωδίες και μεταλλάξεις του όρου power metal! Έτσι λοιπόν στο τεύχος 10 (Αύγουστος 1989) βλέπουμε να υπάρχει ύλη για μπάντες όπως οι Annihilator, Forbidden, Exodus, Megadeth, Pestilence, Coroner κ.α. Ενώ αποκαλεί power metal, μπάντες όπως οι Vendetta και Defiance, τις οποίες η βάση δεδομένων Metal Archives, κατατάσσει στο thrash. Τους δε Sepultura, αποκαλεί death metal gods.

Ενδιαφέρον έχει το πως χαρακτηρίζονται στο ξεκίνημά τους, μπάντες τις οποίες πλέον θεωρούμε ως ‘’US power metal’’. Κατά βάση αναφέρονται απλώς ως heavy metal, τονίζοντας όμως ότι έχουν ‘’european ή british sound’’ (σε αντιδιαστολή προφανώς με τον αμερικανικό ήχο της σκηνής του L.A.). Σε πολλές περιπτώσεις επίσης, χρησιμοποιείται η λέξη class ή classy για να περιγράψει τον ήχο αυτών των συγκροτημάτων, φτάνοντας στο σημείο π.χ. των Hittman που αυτοπροσδιορίζονται ως class metal. Υπάρχουν πάντως και κάποιες λίγες περιπτώσεις όπως οι Liege Lord και οι Jag Panzer, όπου ο όρος power metal χρησιμοποιείται για αυτούς επαναλαμβανόμενα.

Ο όρος thrash metal υπήρξε ο ανθεκτικότερος και εν τέλει σαφέστερος από όσους εξετάζουμε. Εξ αρχής δήλωνε τα συγκροτήματα τα οποία έπαιζαν γρηγορότερα, αλλά και σκληρότερα (βλ. λιγότερο μελωδικά σε φωνητικό, αλλά και οργανικό επίπεδο) από την μέση heavy metal μπάντα, συνδυάζοντας το 70s και το πρώιμο 80s heavy metal (ιδίως το NWOBHM) με το punk rock και το hardcore punk . Μάλιστα βλέπουμε κάποιες αναφορές στον ουσιαστικά ταυτόσημο όρο, punk metal που όμως δεν επικράτησε καθόλου. Ο όρος thrash metal αγκαλιάστηκε εξ αρχής από δημοσιογράφους, οπαδούς και μουσικούς κι εκεί οφείλεται η μεγάλη στην συνέχεια, διάδοση του όρου. Χαρακτηριστικό αυτής της τάσης, τα περιοδικά που εμφανίζονται από το 1984 και μετά και μάλιστα σε πολλές διαφορετικές χώρες, με τίτλους όπως Blowing Thrash, Death Thrasher, Metallic Thrash, Merciless Thrash, Metal Thrashing Mad, Stormtroopers Of Thrashing Madness, Total Thrash, Thrash Attack, Thrash Metal κ.α. Επίσης εμφάνιση μπάντας την ίδια εποχή, με το όνομα Thrash Queen. Η έννοια του thrash δεν αλλοιώθηκε σχεδόν καθόλου κατά τη διάρκεια των επόμενων ετών με αποτέλεσμα σχεδόν όλα τα συγκροτήματα που περιγράφονταν ως thrash στο ξεκίνημα της εμφάνισης αυτού του όρου, να παραμένουν υπό την ομπρέλα του και τώρα, πλην λίγων περιπτώσεων που ενδεχομένως να θεωρούνται πλέον ως speed metal (π.χ. το ντεμπούτο των Anthrax). Από τα στοιχεία που θα παρατεθούν φαίνεται ξεκάθαρα πως η πρώτη αναφορά στο thrash metal ως μουσικό όρο, δεν έγινε από τον Malcolm Dome του Kerrang, τον Φεβρουάριο του 1984². Ο ισχυρισμός λοιπόν του Dave Reynolds³ από το Metal Forces, πως το δικό τους περιοδικό εφηύρε τον όρο, είναι πιο κοντά στην πραγματικότητα, αν και μάλλον φαίνεται πως τότε απλώς αποτυπώθηκε ό όρος γραπτά για πρώτη φορά⁴. Όρος όμως που φαίνεται να υπήρχε στο καθημερινό λεξιλόγιο του underground της εποχής, λειτουργώντας ως ρήμα (θρασάρω, κατά το ροκάρω). Άλλωστε υπήρξε και κυκλοφορία μιας συλλογής με το όνομα New York Thrash, το 1982 (άρα προηγείται χρονολογικά όλων αυτών των αναφορών), περιλαμβάνοντας τραγούδια από διάφορες hardcore μπάντες. Επίσης, πέρα και πριν από το τραγούδι Metal Thrashing Mad των Anthrax, που υποτίθεται πως ενέπνευσε τον Malcolm Dome να ‘’εφεύρει’’ τον όρο, βλέπουμε στο τραγούδι Whiplash των Metallica, την φράση ‘’you’re thrashing all around’’. Η τόσο ταχεία διάδοση του όρου μέσα στο 1984, με τις αναφορές που θα δούμε παρακάτω, με τα περιοδικά που βάζουν τον όρο thrash στα ονόματά τους ή π.χ. το τραγούδι Thrash till Death από το demo των Whiplash, Thunderstruk (Αύγουστος 1984), θεωρώ ότι υποστηρίζει την άποψη πως ο όρος προϋπήρχε και δεν διαδόθηκε κατ’ανάγκη από ένα και μόνο άτομο. Απλώς αποτυπώνεται για πρώτη φορά γραπτώς, κατά πάσα πιθανότητα στο Metal Forces.

 

Death metal και thrash metal στην ουσία ταυτίζονται ως όροι στο ξεκίνημα της εμφάνισής τους, χωρίς να είναι εύκολο να διακρίνει κάποιος σε τι συνίσταται η διαφορά τους⁵ (βλ. τις παρακάτω αναφορές σε Metallica, Exciter, Crossfire). Όσο προχωράμε πάντως μέσα στο έτος 1984⁶ και προς το 1985, παρατηρούμε πως ο όρος death metal αρχίζει να χρησιμοποιείται κυρίως για τις μπάντες με τον πιο ακραίο (για την εποχή) ήχο και τα πιο ακραία φωνητικά, συν μια στιχουργική θεματολογία επίσης πιο ακραία/σκοτεινή (σατανισμός, αποκρυφισμός, θάνατος κλπ). Έτσι λοιπόν, αν και χρησιμοποιείται για μπάντες που πλέον τις θεωρούμε κατά βάση thrash, αυτές είναι οι πιο ακραίες ηχητικά, όπως οι Sodom, Destruction, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Slayer, Onslaught και Possessed⁷ και όχι π.χ. οι Metallica, Anthrax, Exodus. Η γνώμη του γράφοντος είναι πως όταν εμφανίζεται το πραγματικά ακραίο (σε φωνή, βαρύτητα και ταχύτητες) metal, στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του ’80, αυτό τότε γίνεται ΤΟ death metal,

5 Με βάση τα στοιχεία που θα δούμε παρακάτω, είναι λάθος τα γραφόμενα στο τεύχος 78 (Ιούνιος του 1991) του ελληνικού Metal Hammer, όπου στο αφιέρωμα για το death metal, ειπώθηκαν οι εξής φράσεις ‘’ποιος θα φανταζόταν το 1983, τότε που η λέξη death metal δεν υπήρχε καν σαν όρος ή έννοια’’ και παρακάτω, ‘’την περίοδο 1982-1986, όπως ανέφερα και προηγουμένως, ο όρος death metal δεν υπήρχε’’. Φαντάζει όμως ανεξήγητο ότι αυτά γράφτηκαν από τον Ανδρέα Βενέρη, έναν πραγματικά βαθύ γνώστη της metal μουσικής (ιδίως της ακραίας) και πραγματικού guru του underground εκείνης της εποχής. Πόσο μάλλον όταν το όνομα του Βενέρη εντοπίζεται στη στήλη αλληλογραφίας (Penbangers) του Metal Forces (τεύχος 9, 1984), άρα ήταν εξοικειωμένος με την ορολογία περί death metal. Εξάλλου ό όρος αναφέρεται και σε τεύχη του ελληνικού Metal Hammer μέσα στο 1986 (Ιανουάριος, τεύχος 14 για τους Slayer, Σεπτέμβριος, τεύχος 21 σε δισκοκριτική Celtic Frost και στο τεύχος 22, Οκτωβρίου, σε συνέντευξη Slayer)

6 Μέσα στο έτος 1984 παρατηρείται μια έκρηξη στη χρήση του όρου (βλ. την ομώνυμη συλλογή της Noise Records, το demo των Possessed, το demo Death By Metal των Mantas/Death). Προηγείται πάντως κατά το 1983 το demo Death Metal, από τη NWOBHM μπάντα No Mercy, με μηδαμινή πάντος επιρρόη στο μετέπειτα ιδίωμα.

με αποτέλεσμα οτιδήποτε λιγότερο ακραίο, να εντάσσεται πλέον στην κατηγορία του αμέσως λιγότερο ακραίου υποείδους του metal, που είναι το thrash. Έτσι, σταματάει να χρησιμοποιείται η φράση death metal προκειμένου να περιγράψει ηχητικά, μπάντες όπως οι Slayer και οι Destruction. Μεγάλο ρόλο στην καθιέρωση του όρου death metal, αλλά και τη γενικότερη αισθητική του, παίζουν απ’ ότι φαίνεται οι Hellhammer/Celtic Frost. Εκτός του ότι ήταν από τις πρώτες μπάντες που χαρακτηρίστηκαν έτσι, είχαν και μία έντονη σχέση με το όλο concept του θανάτου. Από το σύνθημα ‘’only death is real’’ που υπάρχει στο οπισθόφυλλο του Apocalyptic Raids και το τραγούδι Triumph of Death που υπάρχει μέσα (και έδωσε και το όνομά του στο ομώνυμο demo του 1983), μέχρι το μέλος τους με το ψευδώνυμο Slayed Necros, το management τους με όνομα Prowlin’ Death, το fan club τους με όνομα Necromaniac Union και την συμμετοχή τους στη συλλογή “Death Metal’’ της Noise records, παντου υπάρχει η μυρωδιά του θανάτου...Την ίδια την φράση death metal μπορεί κάποιος να την δει στα special thanks του Apocalyptic Raids. Να επισημανθεί πάντως πως το death metal στην κλασική του (όπως δηλαδή το αντιλαμβανόμαστε σήμερα) μορφή (late 80s, early 90s), ήταν αποτέλεσμα της μίξης του παλιού (’84-’85) ‘’death metal’’ με το grindcore. Απλή ακρόαση των grindcore δίσκων που κυκλοφόρησαν μεταξύ 1987 και 1989 (Napalm Death, Carcass, Bolt Thrower, Terrorizer, Repulsion, Extreme Noise Terror), θεωρώ ότι επιβεβαιώνει αυτή την θέση. Σημαντική άλλωστε είναι η παραδοχή του Trey Azagthoth των Morbid Angel για την επιρροή που του άσκησαν τα demos των Terrorizer, αλλά και οι Carcass στην διαμόρφωση του ήχου του¹. Κάτι που είναι εμφανές στην ηχητική διαφορά μεταξύ του Abominations of Desolation που ηχογραφήθηκε το 1986 (αλλά δεν κυκλοφόρησε τότε) και του επίσημου ντεμπούτου της μπάντας, Altars of Madness που κυκλοφόρησε το 1989.

 

Black Metal ονομάζεται ο δεύτερος δίσκος των Venom , οποίος κυκλοφορεί το 1982 και σηματοδοτεί από τότε μια έκρηξη όσον αφορά τη χρήση αυτού του όρου προκειμένου να περιγράψει την μουσική κάποιων συγκροτημάτων. Για ιστορικούς λόγους να αναφέρουμε πως υπάρχει ένα demo του 1980 από τους Holy Moses, που το συναντάμε στη βάση δεδομένων ‘’Metal Archives’’ να φέρει τον τίτλο Black Metal Masters! Παρόλα αυτά, φαίνεται πως πρόκειται για μεταγενέστερη προσθήκη αυτού του ονόματος στο demo, με σκοπό μάλλον την διεκδίκηση της πατρότητας του όρου...Πουθενά άλλωστε στην έρευνά μου δεν το συνάντησα ως ονομασία, ούτε βρήκα τους Holy Moses να αναφέρονται ως πρωτοπόροι του black metal. O όρος κατά τη δεκαετία του ’80 χρησιμοποιείται για οποιαδήποτε metal μπάντα έχει σατανικό στίχο και ανάλογο image, ανεξαρτήτως ηχητικού στίγματος. Έτσι λοιπόν βλέπουμε εκτός των Venom, να χαρακτηρίζονται έτσι, μπάντες όπως οι Mercyful Fate, Running Wild, Stormwitch, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Sodom, Slayer, Destruction, Sepultura, Possessed, Onslaught κλπ. Το γεγονός ότι αποκαλούνταν αυτές οι μπάντες black metal, δεν απέκλειε και τον χαρακτηρισμό τους με άλλους όρους (π.χ. thrash ή death) μιας και όπως είπαμε υπήρχε μεγάλη επικάλυψη μεταξύ τους. Πάντως η χρήση του όρου black metal ήταν ευρύτατη κατά τη δεκαετία του ’80, μεταξύ τόσο των δημοσιογράφων, όσο και των οπαδών, αλλά και των μουσικών². Σίγουρα λοιπόν δεν ήταν ‘’ένα καπρίτσιο των Venom’’ όπως ειπώθηκε κάπου στο YouTube, ή κάποιο περιθωριακό φαινόμενο. Ο όρος πάντως υποχωρεί αρκετά κατά το δεύτερο μισό της δεκαετίας του ’80, απλούστατα διότι οι περισσότερες μπάντες εγκαταλείπουν τον σατανικό στίχο και το ανάλογο image! Παρά την μεγάλη ηχητική ποικιλία που έχουν τα συγκροτήματα που αποκαλούνται black metal στα 80s, εντούτοις τα περισσότερα από αυτά ανήκουν ηχητικά στο πιο ακραίο (μουσικά και φωνητικά) φάσμα του metal, κάτι που γίνεται συνείδηση από τότε (βλ. παρακάτω τη δήλωση του Mike από τους Destruction, στο Metal Forces), και που θα θέσει τα θεμέλια για αυτό που θα ονομαστεί αργότερα ‘’δεύτερο κύμα του black metal’’. Ο γράφων ωστόσο έχει την πεποίθηση πως για να γίνει καλύτερα κατανοητή η εξέλιξη του όρου black metal, χρειάζεται να το ορίσουμε ως τρία κύματα, όπου το κάθε επόμενο κύμα στενεύει την ευρύτητα του όρου black metal σε σχέση με το προηγούμενο. 1ο κύμα λοιπόν, της δεκαετίας του ’80, που περιγράψαμε παραπάνω και όπως είπαμε, αφορά οποιαδήποτε metal μπάντα έχει σατανικό στίχο και image. 2ο κύμα, αρχές ’90, με μπάντες του underground από διάφορες χώρες, οι οποίες επικοινωνούν μεταξύ τους (σχηματίζοντας αυτό που λέμε ‘’σκηνή’’) και παίζουν ακραίο metal με σατανικό στίχο και image. Το κύμα αυτό προκύπτει ως αντίδραση στο τότε death metal, το οποίο είχε γίνει σχεδόν mainstream (προβολή από το MTV κλπ) και είχε αποποιηθεί τις ‘’σατανικές’’ του ρίζες. Ηχητικά πάντως το δεύτερο κύμα έχει κι αυτό ποικιλία, πάντα στα πλαίσια όμως του ακραίου metal πλέον³. Οι μόνες μπάντες του είδους που παρουσιάζουν σημαντικές ηχητικές ομοιότητες μεταξύ τους, είναι οι νορβηγικές (Mayhem, Thorns, Darkthrone, Immortal, Burzum), πράγμα λογικό, καθώς κάνουν παρέα μεταξύ τους και αλληλοεπηρρεάζονται, ιδίως από το στυλ riffing των Euronymous (Mayhem) και Snorre (Thorns)⁴, το οποίο είναι μια μετεξέλιξη του στυλ των Bathory των τριών πρώτων δίσκων. 3ο κύμα, αυτό που προκύπτει μετά τη δολοφονία του Euronymous από τον Varg Vikernes (Burzum) τον Αύγουστο του 1993. Είναι το γεγονός που σηματοδοτεί το πέρασμα του black metal από το underground στο mainstream. Χιλιάδες κόσμος σε όλο τον πλανήτη αρχίζει να μαθαίνει για αυτές τις μπάντες και αυτό το είδος μουσικής. Πολλές νέες μπάντες εμφανίζονται τόσο στη Νορβηγία, όσο και σε άλλες χώρες, μιμούμενες το νορβηγικό στύλ black metal και ταυτίζοντας το στη συνείδηση του κόσμου με το black metal γενικότερα! Πλέον λοιπόν το black metal πέρα από το στιχουργικό και αισθητικό μέρος, οριοθετείται και ηχητικά, με κύρια χαρακτηριστικά τα υπεργρήγορα τραγούδια (με έντονη χρήση δίκασης και blastbeats στα drums), τα ελάχιστα κιθαριστικά solos, τον ‘’παγωμένο’’ ήχο στην κιθάρα με τα πολλά πρίμα (treble), την primitive/raw παραγωγή, το ‘’σιδηροδρομικό’’ riffing (που δίνει την αίσθηση της έλλειψης αρχής, μέσης και τέλους), την τεχνική του tremolo picking στην κιθάρα και τις χαρακτηριστικές υψίσυχνες κραυγές ως φωνητικά. Στην πορεία του χρόνου, τα ηχητικά αυτά χαρακτηριστικά θα υπερκεράσουν τον ‘’σατανικό’’ χαρακτήρα, όπου πλέον δεν θεωρείται καν προϋπόθεση για να ονομαστεί κάποια μπάντα ως black metal. Σε παραλληλισμό με ό,τι αναφέραμε παραπάνω για το death metal, το νορβηγικό στυλ black metal, θεωρήθηκε από ένα σημείο και μετά ως ΤΟ black metal και οτιδήποτε άλλο θα έπρεπε πλέον να οριστεί διαφορετικά⁵.

Τέλος να αναφέρουμε ότι όπως θα δούμε παρακάτω, ήδη από τα 80s υπήρχαν και οι όροι speedcore, thrashcore, deathcore, metalcore και crossover προκειμένου να περιγράψουν τη μίξη της ακραίας metal μουσικής με το hardcore punk.

Σε επόμενο ερώτημά μου, αν τον επηρέασαν και οι Voivod όπως είχα κάποτε διαβάσει, η απάντησή του ήταν καταφατική και κατονόμασε το ‘’Killing Technology’’ ως το αγαπημένο του δίσκο από αυτούς.

Ας δούμε λοιπόν τα σχετικά στοιχεία που τεκμηριώνουν τους παραπάνω ισχυρισμούς, ζητώντας προκαταβολικά συγγνώμη από τους αναγνώστες για την παράθεση τόσο πολλών παραδειγμάτων, αλλά επιθυμούμε να έχουμε την όσο δυνατόν μεγαλύτερη τεκμηρίωση (και λιγότερη αμφισβήτηση από τρίτους) για τα συμπεράσματα που εκθέσαμε παραπάνω.
