Death the Leveller - ΙΙ

Όσοι ασχολούνται με το doom metal, και ειδικά την πιο επική πλευρά του, λογικά θα έχουν ακούσει τους Ιρλανδούς Death the Leveller, είτε από το ΕΡ “I” του 2017, είτε από την εταιρεία τους που έχει συγκεντρώσει πολλά από τα ονόματα της σκηνής αυτής. Το “IΙ” είναι η πρώτη τους full-length δουλειά που θα κυκλοφορήσει σε λίγο καιρό, και έχουμε να κάνουμε με μια πολύ αξιοπρόσεχτη δουλειά.

Στο άλμπουμ υπάρχουν 4 τραγούδια με μέση διάρκεια τα 10 λέπτα. Από το γεγονός αυτό και μόνο ίσως κάποιοι δουν την κυκλοφορία αυτή αρνητικά, γιατί το μυαλό τους πάει αυτόματα στο γνωστό doom ύφος όπου ένα τραγούδι αρχίζει και ξεχνά να σταματήσει, επαναλαμβάνοντας τον ίδιο ρυθμό. Οι Death the Leveller δε ξεφεύγουν εντελώς από το μοτίβο αυτό, να είμαστε ειλικρινείς, αλλά υπάρχει μια σημαντική διαφορά – η δραματικότητα που βγάζει το συγκρότημα.

Η μπάντα, αν και έχει επικά στοιχεία, δεν ακολουθεί τον σύγχρονο epic doom metal δρόμο, ούτε το πατροπαράδοτο Sabbath-ικό doom, ούτε βέβαια το stoner doom/sludge metal ύφος. Αντίθετα, εστιάζουν σε μια έντονη δραματικότητα – όχι gothic- που συναντά κανείς στη σκηνή σπάνια. Όσοι θεωρούν ξεχωριστό άκουσμα στη ζωή τους,  το “Mirror of Sorrow” των Solitude Aeturnus, θα καταλάβουν πολύ καλά τι γίνεται στο ντεμπούτο των Death the Leveller. Το κομμάτι αυτό είναι το πιο ξεχωριστό στην ιστορία των Solitude Aeturnus, ένας δραματικός ύμνος που ούτε οι ίδιοι οι τεξανοί δεν μπόρεσαν να επαναλάβουν, κάτι σαν μια δραματική, επική doom metal μπαλάντα.

Ένα παρόμοιο συναίσθημα βγαίνει και από τα τραγούδια των Iρλανδών doom metallers. Oι κιθάρες και ο ήχος τους, αν και αργόσυρτα, δεν είναι πολύ heavy, και το συγκρότημα επιλέγει ένα ελεγειακό, μελαγχολικού τύπου doom, με τη δραματική ερμηνεία του Denis Dowling στα φωνητικά να κόβει ανά στιγμές την ανάσα. Αυτή η ερμηνεία ανεβάζει πολύ τα κομμάτια, και αν το συγκρότημα προσέξει λίγο πιο πολύ το θέμα της επαναληψιμότητας κάποιων τμημάτων των τραγουδιών του ή προσθέσει κάποιες αλλαγές-ξεσπάσματα, τότε οι συνθέσεις του θα φτάσουν σε δυσθεώρητα ύψη.

Προς το παρόν, και τα 4 κομμάτια του δίσκου είναι κάτι παραπάνω από πολύ καλά για έναν οπαδό του doom metal, αλλά ειδικά τα “The Golden Bough” (μια φορά στα 20 χρόνια γράφεται τέτοιο κομμάτι) και “So They May Face The Rising Sun”, αξίζει να τα ακούσουν και όσοι ασχολούνται με το γενικότερο heavy metal και όχι μόνο με το doom. Το συγκρότημα πετυχαίνει να ανατριχιάζει τον ακροατή σε αρκετές στιγμές, και όσοι αρέσκονται στα μελαγχολικά-δραματικά ακούσματα αλλά με μια επική χροιά, θα απολαύσουν σε μεγάλο ποσοστό τον δίσκο αυτόν.

Those who are interested in doom metal, and especially its most epic side, will likely have heard the Irish band Death the Leveller, either from the 2017 EP "I", or from their label, which has garnered many similar bands of this scene. “II” is their first full-length album to be released in a short while, and here we are dealing with a noteworthy work.

There are 4 songs in the album with an average duration of 10 minutes. From this fact only, some may view this release negatively, because their mind automatically goes to the familiar doom style where a song starts and forgets to stop, repeating the same rhythm. Death the Leveller does not completely diverge from this motif, to be honest, but there is one major difference - the dramatic melodies of the band.

The band, although epic, doesn't follow the modern epic doom metal path, neither the traditional Sabbath-like doom, nor the stoner doom/sludge metal style. Instead, they focus on an intense dramatic style, similar perhaps to Solitude Aeturnus's "Mirror of Sorrow". This dramatic anthem is something different in the history of Solitude Aeturnus, that even the Texans themselves could not repeat – a unique, dramatic, epic doom metal ballad.

A similar feeling comes from the songs in Death the Leveller's first LP. The guitars and the general sound of the album, though slow, are not too heavy, and the band chooses a melancholic type of doom, with Denis Dowling's dramatic vocal performance being breathtaking at times. This raises the tracks to a high level, and if the band pays a bit more attention to the repetition that occurs in some parts of its songs, then these compositions will reach unparalleled heights.

At the moment, all 4 tracks on the album are more than just good for a doom metal fan.  Εspecially, "The Golden Bough" (amazing song) and "So They May Face The Rising Sun" , worth a listen from those who like heavy metal in general and not just doom metal. The band succeeds in giving the listener goosebumps during several parts in the album, and those who like melancholic-dramatic sounds, but with an epic tone, will greatly enjoy this album.
